My article from last year on why porn bans are the wrong tool to protect children online.

The Online Safety Act doesn't make our children any safer - The Skeptic
The Online Safety Act may be well-intentioned, but it is a fundamentally flawed attempt to legislate away a complex social issue.

Continue to be disappointed at this government’s cultural and technical illiteracy. I did not expect Labour to be the government which went hard on surveillance and peeking over everyone’s shoulder in case you’re saying or doing stuff they don’t like.

Having not seen it in ages I recently had cause to rewatch the end of Ace Ventura. Genuinely impressed at how they were able to make a single scene which was simultaneously transphobic, homophobic, and misogynistic. Fuck me.

The Guardian’s coverage of the new White House Press Secretary has a weird dig at Colin Baker in the opening paragraphs. Why would you add that? Such a needlessly unpleasant comment.

I’m looking to connect with university lecturers and staff. We offer student tickets for @ffconf.org, but they’re easy to miss, and I’d love to give the next generation of web developers the chance to attend a great indie event. If anyone can contact please drop me comment here I can follow up.

On BBC, a “Protect the Dolls” t shirt is erased. In the US, opening of a revered comedy show says women in the gym are dressed like whores - and still we hear talk of the oppression by “the woke” - to hell with every comic that has monetised their base by pretending they’re a free speech rebel

GitHub just finished ripping styled-components out of github.com. Result: 55% less time to server-render a page, 25% faster component init. CSS-in-JS makes you pay for styles twice: collecting them on the server, running JS on the client. Static CSS is *always* more efficient. Ship CSS.

Folks in the comments here seem to think this is from Logopolis. Pretty sure it’s part one of Resurrection of the Daleks with the TARDIS in the time corridor. (Ofc it’s just like Doctor Who fans to try and work out which episode it is rather than engaging with the joke. Myself included.)

And b) the latency on their XML-RPC integration is awful. They don’t fire until several minutes after the episode actually publishes. So my site is out of date at exactly the time people are there looking for the new episodes.

This is working okay, except that a) the endpoint gets SO MUCH SPAM from bots trying to hack Wordpress. I’m validating the requests so it’s okay, but it is also wasteful of CPU time handling those bogus requests.

Mike Hall @mikehall314.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
So what I’ve done is create a fake XML-RPC endpoint in my app, which implements just the bits of the API that Libsyn want to hook into for the Wordpress integration. I am then ignoring everything in their payload, and just using it as a build hook.

In my case I just want to kick off a static site rebuild, but could be for any reason right? They do not seem to have this feature. They do however have a feature where you can configure a Wordpress blog to create a new post when an episode is published via XML-RPC.
