Pevensy Castle this weekend. Crazy that I've not visited before. A Norman Castle inside a massive Roman fort. It must have been very impressive in its heyday.

It was a really common narrative. This Guardian article from 2015 is pretty typical: "unless you’re rich enough to afford the training, or fortunate enough to be attending the right school, the barriers to learning can be high."

New look menu for Guitar Dashboard. The old-style text now replaced by icons and the scale family drop down moved to the control panel, which means that the current scale type is now visible. guitardashboard.com

Guitar Dashboard now has sound. It's been too long coming. Now you can hear scales, modes, and chords without having to reach for your guitar. guitardashboard.com

Our local chalk stream. Crystal clear water, but very cold. It's a very popular wild swimming spot. That pool is about 5ft deep.

I just added "C Standard" tuning to Guitar Dashboard after a request from Steve Spencer. He says: "It's a tuning that is quite popular in desert rock, doom, metal, and various other genres." 🤘

I'm gradually moving settings on Guitar Dashboard from the menu-bar to gear icons on the actual components they relate to. For now you get both ways of changing settings, but the menu ones will dissapear at some point.

The Joseph Wright exhibition at the National Gallery is small but superb. IMO he should be counted alongside Turner and Constable as one of the English greats.

I dug an old Raspberry Pi 2 out of the cupboard and repurposed it as a desk clock. I'm using the excellent wtfutil and my own custom clock generator for the TUI. Endless tinkering fun!

Not a huge fan of the Rust closure syntax. I imagine there's a good reason for using pipe instead of brackets for the argument list. I suppose at least it makes it clear that this is a closure rather than a function.

The Rust debugger in Zed is pretty intuitive for anyone who's used the C# debugger in VS. I've only used it on really simple examples so far though.

Interesting how Rust provides the `?` syntax as a kind of poor-mans `do` notation. Can one make it work with one's own types I wonder?

Unexpected mini-feature of Rust that I haven't come across in any other language: You can reuse a variable name in a new variable declaration and the compiler is fine with it. If it's in a new inner scope then the outer scope retains the original value too. I'm not sure I like this.

I found myself writing this result merge function just avoid nested closures. It's not very pretty, but it does the trick. It would be cool if I could find a way to persuade the type system to give nicer names than "a" and "b" though.
