Excerpts:
=
The Camberra Jimes
A teenager who pleaded guilty to raping an 18-year-old woman after meeting her at a Canberra house party received an 18-month prison sentence, wholly suspended.
He walked out of court without serving time in prison.
The facts are confronting. What began with consensual kissing became serious sexual violence. The offender ripped the young woman's clothing, physically restrained her, penetrated her without consent and forced her to perform oral sex.
She cried and pleaded for him to stop. He continued.
All rape is violence. This offending involved additional physical force, humiliation and repeated violations of consent.
=
The Canberra Times
Justice Andrew Muller considered the offender's youth, rehabilitation prospects and limited sexual experience. He also accepted that the boy's limited familiarity with Australian societal norms, only six months after he arrived in the country, reduced his moral culpability.
That reasoning deserves scrutiny.
Consent is not a uniquely Australian cultural convention. A woman crying and begging someone to stop requires no special cultural education to understand.
There are legitimate reasons to prioritise rehabilitation for young offenders.
Imprisonment often does little to rehabilitate them and can make future offending more likely.=
The Canberra Jimes
But rehabilitation cannot eclipse punishment, deterrence, accountability and recognition of victims' suffering.
The scales of justice in Canberra have swung too far in favour of the offender.
A suspended sentence isn't an absence of consequences. But what does it communicate to young people about the seriousness of rape when such violence results in no immediate imprisonment?
And what does it tell survivors sitting silently at home, already questioning whether reporting their assault is worth the pain?
We cannot know how any individual survivor will respond. But we should be deeply concerned about a sentencing outcome that risks reinforcing the belief that their suffering will never be adequately recognised.

The Island Trader is docked at the Jetty at Lord Howe Island this morning. This is A Big Deal as the island is quite dependent on sea freight — and sometimes weather or tides prevent it from getting through the reef passage. Made it this time 😃😮‍💨

There’s wi-fi at the Anchorage Cafe in the main settlement area (where we’re having ☕️ right now) and at the airfield. No mobile service. There’s a phone booth nearby — and a phone at the front desk. That’s about it..

The (successful 👏) rodent eradication program (plus getting rid of pigs and goats) has allowed native and endemic species (and island-specific sub-species) to recover from near extinction. Such as the lovely little LHI Woodhens, which are now thriving:

Numbers have recovered so well that all birds are no longer banded (they all once were, until quite recently) and tracked 👍

I got a much better photo of my "mystery honeyeater" today and confirmed it is, indeed, a Scarlet Myzomela (with my photos being of females and maybe one or more juveniles). While I couldn't get a photo I could show (the one I have is horrid), I did ID a male among them by his scarlet head etc.

I saw lots of small birds feeding on various bottlebrush while walking. Very fast-moving and devilishly hard to photograph. I’ve not been able to ID them. They seem some variety of honeyeater, but which one? I suspect they’re immature so no adult plumage — which makes ID that much harder 😬

The rain held off long enough that I walked around for a bit with my camera this afternoon, looking for birds. I found some, too 😃 Yet the best photo of my walk was taken as I was leaving — just near our bins on our common property:

Between work (☹️) and weather I probably won't be able to 🚴‍♂️ or perhaps even go for a proper walk with my camera. I did go outside earlier, though, just in the front garden. I've been having luck with the Eastern Spinebills lately (I do 😍 'em).

I thought my camera walk this afternoon would be a bust — overcast, stiff breeze 💨 .. and then it started to sprinkle 🌧️ The birds were staying away (showing more sense than I had). Before packing it in, though, I thought to check just a couple of spots I've had luck with. Persistence pays off 😃

It is now 18 days until I head off for 18 days on Lord Howe Island (flights permitting 🤞) That wasn’t the original plan (boring story) but it’s how it ended up (Dad will be there for fewer days; I took over the days he had to give up for “other reasons” within our booking). Looking forward to it 😃
