This was a hell of a movie. #JustWatched
Screenshot of my 4½ star review of Mad God (2021, Tippett):

An undeniable artistic achievement. Possibly the most unrelentingly hellish visions ever put on screen, at least for a feature length movie. The labor and artistry is awe-inspiring. I can't rate this in comparison to conventional narrative films — it plays by its own rules, and you have to meet it on its own terms. The most disgusting film I've ever seen, by a long shot. Any nightmares I have as a result of watching this will be tame in comparison to the movie itself. I saw Phil Tippett talk about his depression in a documentary, and it's clear he was working some shit out here. What a tragedy that he had to sell off his Studios.

Interconnected manga short stories that range from bittersweet to downright sad. A good library sale score from a number of years back. I don't think I realized this was volume 2 when I picked it up — I was just excited to find it — but it worked mostly okay starting halfway through. #JustRead

I was just reminded that I've had my songs up on Bandcamp for 10 years now, jeez Louise. Of course, the recordings themselves are from ~30 years ago. apartland.bandcamp.com/album/the-ti... For a while I've been considering making another "album" of my more experimental/noise stuff. Maybe someday.

I got a film negative scanner and I've started scanning my many hundreds of photos from the '90s. Mostly concert photos, which I'm still figuring out how to present, but here's the first and hopefully not last cat pic I've come across. Ethel, 1995:

Is it bad that the more Murderbot gets in touch with its emotions the more I relate to it? System Collapse has MB using its obsession with TV in a creative way that I appreciated; Platform Decay starts with a teamup with MB's new "friend" that I wish lasted longer. #JustRead

I haven't posted anything else about Dromfest yet, but it included a screening of this film on Sunday morning. #JustWatched
Screenshot of my 4 star review of Radiation (1999, Galinsky & Hawley):

A great example of scrappy, lo-fi, on-the-fly, street level, DIY filmmaking. There's a palpable sense of risk in the production which perfectly echoes the dangerous lives of the characters. It feels like a minor miracle just for existing, let alone having come together as well as it did. Watched with an audience of fellow aging indie rockers at Dromfest in Catskill, NY, with a Q&A with Michael Galinsky.

A terraformed planet is seeded with a viral intelligence by a megalomaniacal scientist, but it infects the wrong species. Meanwhile, another megalomaniac leads the remainder of humanity to colonize the planet. That's the setup for this era-spanning novel. Not recommended for arachnophobes. #JustRead

If anyone ever knew the power of comics, it was Jack. Squeezing in a little Kirby at the last minute on his birthday.
Detail of the cover of The Losers #153, written and drawn by Jack Kirby. One soldier points at a giant Nazi cannon and exclaims "How can we stop that giant cannon, 'Big Max'?" Another replies "With our secret weapon -- this comic book!" while brandishing a copy of "The Devastator!" which features a futuristic hovering tank.

A tale of 3 cities, really: one tyrannical, one lawless, and one alien and utopian, all on a tidally locked planet colonized long ago by humans. Themes of loss, memory, emotional obsession, loyalty, and transformation. Beautiful but a little jumbled at times. The ending begs for a sequel. #JustRead

1990. I wouldn't even own a CD player until a few years later, when I was well out of my brief Dead Can Dance phase, but I taped it on my downstairs neighbors' stereo. You probably didn't know I had a Dead Can Dance phase, but it led me to other 4AD stuff like Cocteau Twins and Pixies/Breeders, so 👍

#JustWatched on the plane. I kinda went off on this movie.
Screenshot of my 2-star review of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die (2025, Verbinski):

I dunno, man. I think this movie tries too hard. It's a movie that pretends to be smart but is actually pretty dumb.

I can definitely enjoy suspending my disbelief for a couple of hours, but there's too much about this movie that just makes no damn sense. Why does Sam Rockwell even need to recruit a ragtag group of randos (one of whom just happens to turn out to be [big spoiler]) to fulfill his mission in the first place? Maybe there's an explanation but I missed it. At least one of them has a convenient deus ex machina. And it's so painfully obvious who the expendable characters are going to be — they all have a trait in common and it's not a good look for the movie.

The final boss is a 9 year old computer programmer who eats Cheetos, har dee har har. Oh and he's also a [spoiler] for some reason. I enjoyed the "form of the destructor," although, like, where did it come from? Why even bother with a couple of pathetic hired goons when you have that much power behind you? And who's paying for all that technology? Where is IT? Who's supporting the app? Where's marketing? The movie would be more interesting if there were an entire company instead of just one kid. Even Lex Luthor has Lexcorp.

The twist at the end isn't a huge surprise, but it works pretty well, and there was some other stuff that landed okay. A few of the characters help ground the film in spots. I laughed a few times and got caught up in some of the visuals. I didn't really hate this movie, but I'm a little mad at it.Screenshot part 2; entire review is in alt text of first image

Maybe my favorite thing I've watched so far this year. Just amazing. #JustWatched
Screenshot of my 4½ star review of Scavengers Reign:

Now this is my shit right here. Mind-melting sci-fi that will stick with me for a long time. A feast of incredible alien environment and creature (and tech) design that reminds me of some of my favorite comics artists, including Guy Davis, Simon Roy, and Malachi Ward, and the Semiosis novels of Sue Burke. It's a weird world full of beauty, mystery, wonder, and horror. The story is fairly straightforward as the characters struggle to reach their objective, but there's plenty of suspense, strangeness, and surprise, and there are a lot of smart and subtle storytelling and character decisions. The (sometimes literal) transformations the characters undergo are emotionally rich and satisfying. Pacing, editing, music, and sound design are all on point.

The only complaint I have is that some of the voice acting doesn't quite work for me. Everything else though? Magnificent. I feel like my words aren't doing it justice. Highly, highly recommended.

I thought a Miyazaki would be a good wind-down after a stressful day. Friends, this is not really a chill-out movie. No regrets though #JustWatched
Screenshot of my 4 star review of Castle in the Sky (1986, Miyazaki):

I could nitpick this or that plot element or whatever, but then what kind of a monster would I be? It's a fantasy for kids, after all. The levels of imagination and artistry are, of course, staggering, but I didn't find myself quite as immersed in the world of this one as other Miyazakis, at least not until the third act. That might be on me, though.

Not recommended if you're afraid of heights. No guardrails anywhere!

Screenshot of my 3½ star review of Mickey 17:

I'm inclined to like quirky comedy sci-fi, so I was rooting for this movie and I found a lot to like, and I feel charitable toward some of the things that didn't work as well. I'm not sure what I would have thought of it if it were played drier and less broad. It's pretty unsubtle! It's a choice.

Part serrated satire of privilege, racial politics, publishing, and social media; part psychological thriller about a highly corrosive and disordered combination of narcissism, obsession, and profound loneliness, all from the antihero's POV. Dark, tricky, and compulsively readable. #JustRead
