Not the top Steam review of Dressmaker making me cry this morning!

I work in a nursing home. Most of my elderly residents have the shakes, arthritis, troubles with vision, and other ailments that mean they can't keep up with their hobby of sewing. Yesterday I showed one of my residents this game. She used to be a professional dressmaker irl.

It brought her SO much joy. She lit up when she saw all the different fabrics and patterns, and started comparing them against each other to design a new dress. She has been so depressed recently. It can get so boring in nursing homes, because as I said, people become too frail and sick to keep up with the hobbies they used to have. So when I saw her smile and engage with the game, when I saw the gears in her brain turn and her creative juices flow once again, it literally brought a tear to my eye.

I cannot sing this game enough praises, and I'm not even factoring in the joy that I myself have experienced while playing it. It has inspired me to sew again. And I mean really sew, not just mending (which is all I have done with my sewing machine in the last decade). I have found my creativity again.

Dressmaker team, please know that you have created something extremely special here. You have given old ladies with arthritis the gift of dressmaking again. You have inspired me to get out my sewing machine again. And our experiences are only a drop in the ocean; you have touched so many lives with this game.

I'll be honest, there is nothing more demoralizing to me than devs saying "I know AI is built on theft, and anti-labour, and harms the environment, but I'm going to use it anyway bc I don't believe individual choices matter". This is how a movement fails. www.molleindustria.org/blog/future-...

I admire and support developers that commit to an AI-free practice. It’s the only truly ethical position at this point, and has innumerable cognitive and creative benefits. But it can’t be the only path forward. Individual choices and consumer-side battles have delivered very few victories on the environment, GMOs, health, labor, or human rights. If the problems with AI are related to energy and water use, IP theft, cheating, unemployment, spam, and so on, we have to address them as such. Energy consumption wouldn’t be as much as a problem if we used renewables; IP theft wouldn’t be as grave if we all benefited from these remixing machines; unemployment is a capitalist feature not an AI one. In other words, we need structural changes in all these domains and democratic control over these technologies.
“The problem is capitalism” is not an excuse for inaction, but a reminder that holding your fellow artists to the highest ethical standards won’t stop the actual bad actors. You might have more leverage to change things by starting with your own progressively minded community, but it can come at a high cost of division, suspicion, and bad vibes.
Like everyone who lives in front of a computer, I have so much more to say about generative AI, but I’ll probably just wait for the bubble to pop.

Friendly reminder de que ir al gym y cuidarse en un contexto capitalista es UN LUJO. Es caro, lleva mucho tiempo y cansa. Y eso, dentro de las supuestas 8 horas de ocio que tenemos... cuesta mucho.
