Great piece. An ex-gf was Polish, she was born there under communism and emigrated to the US after the Berlin Wall fell. She once described what it was like to live in Poland under communism, she said everyone understood that the system had failed and that it was all bullshit, so everyone cheated.

Her grandparents made moonshine in their apartment and sold it to their neighbors. Nobody believed what the system told them.
