We need: 🚫 A permanent halt on deforestation in Tapanuli orangutan habitat 💸 Financial support from companies which have profited from deforestation, such as palm oil, rubber and paper companies 🔎 An IUCN study to evaluate the Tapanuli orangutan and point to a concrete pathway forward
The following text, superimposed on a very dark photo of orangutans:

We can save the
Tapanuli orangutan with:

A permanent halt on deforestation in their habitat

Financial support from companies which have profited from deforestation

An IUCN study to evaluate the Tapanuli orangutan and point to a concrete pathway forward

The Mighty Earth logo, three increasingly-larger interlocked triangles (like a mountain range) enclosed in a circle and the words MIGHTY EARTH, features at the bottom of the image.

Orangutans are fascinating: they build a new nest to sleep in every day, and sometimes include rain covers, a pillow, and even ‘dolls’ or a set of small branches they hold, with no clear practical function. The good news is that it’s not too late to save them, but it must be now.
Accompanying a picture of a Tapanuili orangutan climbing through the verdant forest canopy, with bright orange fur and a grey-brown face, is the following text:

Roads, farms, dams and mines are the key threats, breaking up their habitat and leaving less room for the species to recover. Fatal conflicts with humans and killings for bushmeat are also suspected. As Mighty Earth’s Amanda Hurowitz says, “It’s really a red alert, all-hands-on-deck moment.”

The critically-endangered Tapanuli orangutan was only discovered in 2017, and only around 650 remain after recent landslides killed an estimated 58 of them - a huge proportion of the species wiped out in one disaster.

Climate change is impacting global food systems, so why aren’t supermarkets taking it more seriously? Especially US supermarkets like Kroger, Costco, Walmart, Albertsons, and Publix which are performing worse than European counterparts at tackling superheating methane emissions.

Who decides what’s on your plate? Supermarkets decide what's on shelves, what's promoted, what's affordable, and what's visible. That means they can support climate-friendly, deforestation-free foods. The question isn't whether supermarkets have influence. It's whether they'll use it. 🌱
