I don't really listen to audiobooks so I am curious if perhaps the narration adds anything more- it's cool they got the VA to do it!

in the case of this character in particular, that means it does have to be quite dark. I understand the choice of author for DnD/humor vibes, but I don't think she likes writing really deep, dark, tragic stories.

I understand why publishers want books to have broad appeal, but I don't think it works for books like these. you kind of have to accept that it's only going to be for a certain audience and cater heavily to that audience.

however, the humor pretty much never turns off, especially once the LI comes into play- and at that point, it felt like any other fantasy romcom by this author. it's still slightly different from her other works and I don't know what limitations she was working with, but I wish it'd been darker.

her humor style has never worked for me personally, but I think it kind of suits BG3 and Astarion's constant quips/brushing things off with humor. DnD, despite being so broad, often has a particular style of humor to me.

I've read this author's other works before and I've also finished BG3, so I was also very curious as to how she'd write him. everything about his story goes against her usual style and endings.

I know not everyone went into it for that reason and I'm kind of the outlier here, but I was happy this book had a lot of that! it's honestly what I focused on more than anything (I kept a list of things I learned lol)

okay now thoughts about the book! I personally looove trivia and collecting random lore tidbits about characters I like, so that's purely what I went into this book for. I wanted to know about his parents, how he got into law, his actual eye color, etc.

at the same time, I also think if you read something and it's starting to make you angry, you do have to step back, cool off, and ask yourself if the writer is being genuinely malicious before passionately critiquing. it can quickly snowball out of control on both sides if not enough people do.

in the past, his darker route was interpreted by certain fans to not actually be abusive, but rather a simple dark romance- to the point the player's reaction to his brutality during kissing was changed to be more consensual. so I do understand why they're upset when he's sanitized.

this character has always caused friction- he's been through a lot of very dark, relatable things for some people, so they're always cautious about someone who means so much to them being interpreted the wrong way.

it's gotta be said first: I'm an artist, so I understand the sentiment that if someone pours their heart into a creative outlet it's rude to brutally tear them down. but I also believe that applies to hobbies/free works- once something becomes a product, you have to be open to fair criticism.
