A traditional Japanese tea room (chashitsu) featuring tatami mat flooring, rustic earthen walls, shoji paper windows, and a curved natural wood pillar (tokobashira).
Framed within the quiet dimness of an intimate tea room (chashitsu), a curved, natural wood pillar (tokobashira) arches gracefully upward from smooth straw-gold tatami mat flooring. Bathed in soft, muted light filtered through translucent paper windows (shōji), the rustic clay plaster walls feature a traditional white papered base (koshi-bari), creating a clean lower border along the floor. Resting on the tatami, a carefully arranged set of tea ceremony utensils—a stoneware tea bowl (chawan) with a bamboo whisk (chasen), a silk-wrapped tea caddy (chaire in shifuku), and a glazed water jar (mizusashi) with a dark lacquered lid—awaits the preparation of matcha. Suspended in the corner above, rustic floating wooden shelves (tsuri-dana) hold a small vessel in the ambient shadow. The room exudes a deeply contemplative sensory atmosphere: the crisp, dry aroma of woven rushes (igusa) and aged cedar, the faint, comforting scent of damp clay plaster, the soft rustle of silk robes across straw mats, and the quiet, expectant stillness of a ritual gathering. Rooted in the sukiya-zukuri architectural style perfected during the Azuchi-Momoyama period by tea masters such as Sen no Rikyū, this sanctuary embodies the humble spirit of wabi-cha (rustic tea culture). Rejecting the ostentatious luxury of feudal court displays, the design elevates unpretentious, natural materials—unplaned logs, river clay plaster mixed with rice straw, woven rushes, and handmade mulberry paper. The prominent use of an irregular, curved pillar (tokobashira) deliberately honors the organic contours of nature, celebrating timber in its unaltered state rather than square, machine-milled wood.

Located in Ichinoseki, Iwate Prefecture, Genbi-kei Gorge—designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument of Japan—stretches for two kilometers along the Iwai River.
Winding through a rugged chasm of water-sculpted stone, the turquoise waters of the Iwai River carve a dramatic path framed by a brilliant autumn canopy. On the right, fiery beech and maple leaves glow in shades of russet, copper, and vermilion, creating a vivid counterpoint to the deep green pines clinging to the dark, mossy rock faces on the left. A soft, silvery mist settles over the distant bend of the ravine, partially shrouding a narrow suspension bridge in atmospheric haze. The scene evokes a vivid sensory atmosphere: the cool, sharp autumn air of Iwate Prefecture, the roaring spray of rushing white water, the earthy scent of damp basalt and fallen leaves, and the quiet reverence of a secluded mountain gorge.
Carved out over millennia through the erosion of volcanic tuff, the ravine is celebrated for its dramatic rock formations, cascading rapids, and unusual cylindrical potholes (ketsugun) worn smooth by tumbling pebbles. Historically, the gorge was admired by Date Masamune, the legendary warlord and founder of the Sendai Domain, who praised its raw, untamed beauty as equal to the famed pine-clad islands of Matsushima. Beyond its dramatic geography, Genbi-kei is famous for its delightful local heritage, including flying dango (Kakko Dango), where teahouse orders of fresh rice dumplings and green tea are sent gliding across the canyon to visitors in a wooden basket suspended on a cable high above the water.

Located in the Taihaku Ward of Sendai, Japan, Akiu Great Falls is widely celebrated as one of Japan’s most majestic waterfalls and a designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
Framed by a delicate arbor of snow-draped branches glowing with cool indigo light, Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Ōtaki) cascades through a frozen gorge in Sendai's mountainous western rim. Heavy winter frost encases every twig and bough in pristine white yukisheshō ("snow makeup"), forming a crystalline lattice over the dark basalt cliffs. Below, the churning waters of the Natori River plunge into a deep, shadowed basin, captured in a silky, luminous blur that contrasts against the static, frozen landscape. The scene evokes an intimate winter sensory atmosphere: the biting, clear mountain air of Miyagi Prefecture, the muffled roar of rushing water echoing within the snow-insulated canyon, the clean scent of frozen hemlock and wet stone, and the deep stillness that settles over the valley during a heavy snowfall.
Plummeting 55 meters into the river canyon below, the falls serve as the natural crowning jewel of the Akiu region, famous for its historic hot springs (Akiu Onsen) which have drawn visitors—including the legendary feudal warlord Date Masamune—for over fifteen centuries. This wilderness landscape embodies Sendai’s enduring identity as Mori no Miyako ("The City of Trees"), where refined culture seamlessly yields to untamed forests and rugged mountain gorges.

A Three-Case Inro Edo period (19th century), Japan Decorated in gold, silver and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane and nashiji and inlaid in mother-of-pearl on a black lacquer ground, with a family of wild boar amongst chrysanthemums and a stream, dense nashijiinteriors, fundame rims Christies
Set against a mirror-polished, jet-black lacquer ground (urushi), a family of wild boars reposes beneath a lush canopy of blooming chrysanthemums (kiku) beside a golden, winding stream. Rendered in dramatic raised relief (takamaki-e), the mother boar curls comfortably upon a bed of gold moss, her textured fur etched with painstaking detail, while her two spirited piglets play nearby in smooth low relief (hiramaki-e). Luminous inlays of iridescent mother-of-pearl (raden) catch the ambient light along the chrysanthemum petals and eyes, gleaming with subtle opalescent blues and greens against the dark backdrop. Intricate mosaic squares of cut gold leaf (kirikane) adorn the stylized riverbanks, blending into soft clouds of sprinkled gold dust (nashiji). The tactile interplay between the glass-smooth black ground, the raised metallic relief of the boar bristles, and the cool shimmer of shell creates an exquisite, miniature sensory cosmos.
Created during the late Edo period (19th century), this three-case inrō represents the pinnacle of Japanese lacquer monozukuri (artisanal craft and technical mastery). Because traditional kimono lacked pockets, men carried personal items—such as seal paste, medicines, or incense—in suspended containers (sagemono) slung from the obi sash via a cord secured by a netsuke counterweight and an ojime bead. The wild boar (inoshishi), one of the twelve animals of the East Asian zodiac, traditionally symbolizes fierce courage, unstoppable determination, and protective maternal devotion, while chrysanthemums embody autumn, nobility, and long life. To craft such an object required months of painstaking labor by a master lacquerer (maki-e-shi), applying dozens of microscopic layers of sap, hand-placing minute gold foil squares, and fitting dense nashiji flake interiors behind tightly sealed, gold-finished fundame rims.

The obligatory yellow and black butterfly on a red higanbana shot. All serious amateur photographers are required to post one of these per season in Japan. I am particularly pleased by how this year’s turned out.Ridiculously red river of spider lilies under canopy of trees losing their leaves. Not one of them is distinct enough from the cloud to know what is is without my telling you. Sort of like that death march passage through Shinagawa station but with flowers instead of people.Red spider Lillie’s in blue of their friends below a slope. Above is a creepy shadowy bokeh dude if you look for him. Probably perfectly normal but I’d still choose the bear.Red red red spider lily poking out of more red and almost identifiable but not quite so spider lilies with bokeh trees in background losing their green.
