there is considerably less integrity in AI than the absolute crummiest 2010s DTV movie that can only afford Cage for 40-60% of the runtime

my favorite part of Exorcist: The Beginning is that there was clearly a studio note saying something to the effect of, "Needs more STAIRS"

There’s simply no shock value in encountering a new, Hannibal-esque corpse sculpture around every corner, or in mangling your arm every time you save your game by plunging it into a sharp-edged save orifice. When there’s been some putrid meat golem at the end of every Resident Evil for 30 years, depiction alone no longer does the job. The game can’t conceive of how to intertwine its mechanics with its horrors for greater impact, so breaking one of the finite lockpicks stings far more than ripping out Aidan’s stitches.

i don't love that my last three assignments have been Resident Evil: Lovecraft, Resident Evil: Twin Peaks, and Resident Evil: Hellraiser

"The Cenobites of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser series weren’t always mutilated torture mavens. As humans, they sought out terrible new experiences in their dissatisfaction with earthly pleasures. Essentially, they were bored. Playing Hellraiser: Revival, it’s easy to envision how they must have felt."

i have been investigating the comics, and it makes a lot of sense in retrospect that the Irish skull man with a top hat and a snake body was a Garth Ennis creation

the solution to enjoying a 6/10 more than a 7/10 is not to give it an 8/10 instead, it is to throw out the system

every argument for a broader, more subjective range of review scores is way more persuasive as an argument against review scores in general you can dream bigger, folks!

tbh that's why a lot of game stories lack human interest. they are about simulating hyper-competence through your ability to adapt to the rules. when games actually allow for failure, people complain
020
Steven Nguyen Scaife @midfalutin.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
new Resident Evil is good, but why do I keep seeing people say it adapts "the feeling of playing the games"? the protagonist here being kind of a bumbling moron is what makes the film distinct!

playing the game with knowledge of the story isn't exactly ruinous since you'll pick up on symbolism better, but it will be a slightly different experience because of that
010
Steven Nguyen Scaife @midfalutin.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
the game has you discover the story over time, with most of it clarified toward the end. the movie is much more straightforward, from what I remember

was also disappointed that it fully sets aside the previous game's (admittedly unsuccessful) attempts to reconcile the more, uh, Troubling aspects of Lovecraft
