For me the issue isn’t whether the owners are “pure,” but that we do not know who the owners are! And Walkinshaw has committed to keeping their identities secret, with only a pinky-promise that conflicts of interest will not affect endorsements.

I catch the bus at 3rd and James, and most of the people I talk to are very polite. Those who aren’t are typically moving slow enough that they’re easy to avoid, unlike the folks who come tearing through, weaving among people, on e-bikes.

As a daily downtown / Pioneer Square commuter, I feel 1000 times more endangered by the sidewalk use of e-bikes and scooters than fentanyl.

In my experience,Westlaw’s 50 state survey feature provides links to at least some of the relevant statutes 95%+ of the time, which is a phenomenal time saver. It also provides truthful and helpful text answers 40-60% of the time, but oc I don’t know which ones they are until I check the links.

I also don’t have context, but wonder if this is true if it would be doable to also come up with an additional metric that only measured same students’ progress from one year to the next to contextualize the existing metric.

I think some sort of licensure for food vendors (especially meat and eggs) makes sense, but with regulations only designed to promote safety, not to hinder vendors’ business.

Mid Beacon Hill @midbeaconhill.bsky.social · 09/11/2025
Local officials should stop pretending that it’s a lack of education that is stopping vendors from getting all the permits and not their lack of support for vendors. I bet if Seattle just copied Portland’s model, we’d host more licensed vendors by 1-2 orders of magnitude.

This is a really good point. Restaurant health codes are enforced by the county through civil procedures — restaurants don’t have SPD busting in and checking water temperatures.

Here, mobile food units need to rent commissary space. In contrast, in Portland, only mobile food units (which needn’t even move) that cook raw animal meat and eggs need to rent commissary space. multco.us/file/plan_re...

I think the fees to obtain the permits are the tip of the iceberg, and the requirements to get the permits are likely the larger issue.

Just glancing at the health website and Reddits from people setting up trucks, I don’t think the need for education about requirements (which CM Rob Saka has been focusing on) is the primary issue, but rather the requirements themselves. And the lack of city support in infrastructure for this.

I know nothing about this, but just looking online, seems you need to have bathroom access for employees within 500 feet (and for customers if seating). I think that’s a couple blocks. Is that feasible for most late night food vendors? cdn.kingcounty.gov/-/media/king...

Amazon folks: Cancel vacation in PeopleSoft as soon as you get layoff notice, before access is cut off. In WA, unused “regular PTO” is paid out on separation. But if you have vacation scheduled during your notice period, your leave balance will be debited by that amount.

It’s a sign of how lost the liberal establishment is that its primary solution to egregious, ineffective, illegal government repression is to require ICE use more surveillance technology while it keeps doing what it does.

If you press the button before the doors are closed, doesn’t that stop the doors from closing? I feel like I have observed this and it isn’t just ritual behavior on my part. But I could be wrong.

I hear you. I vaguely remember Sound Transit asking for input on whether there should be elevators or escalators, and I was 100% for escalators. Today one of the elevators was out, it was all that much worse.

This is about 14 commercial building floors. I guess if there are no other exits, it could be a lot. And hard for rescue folks to get there if something happened to someone midway. And maybe hard to know if someone needed help.

Considering the country’s aging prison population, we have basically sentenced people to Type 2 diabetes. www.npr.org/2024/03/11/1...

The U.S. prison population is rapidly graying. Prisons aren't built for what's coming
By one measure, about a third of all prisoners will be considered geriatric by 2030. Prison systems are grappling with how to care for their elderly prisoners — and how to pay for it.

This article notes that many incarcerated folks need to turn to commissaries to ensure adequate nutrition, but those menus are also largely starch-based, with only a couple proteins (eg, tuna and high-sodium beef stew) and no fiber-rich produce.
