I had a similar reaction when I saw Saturn for the first time, not as a photo in a textbook, but The Actual Saturn. Up there. Looking back at me.

Dick, these are beautiful black damselflies that we see in the summertime here in NC. I like to take slow-motion videos of them flying and landing softly on shrubs in the forest.

Love the frogs jumping left and right image! I originally thought of abundance--rice filling every bowl (the dream) but then I remember where we are right now in our country and our world (the reality). More haiku! more More MORE!!! Thank you Dick 💛

Coffee and Haiku ( Sankara Jayanth Sudanagunta) @coffeeandhaiku.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
I'm so happy with how this came out. Has that traditional japanese/chinese brush work vibe and nothing makes me happier. Someday I hope I'll learn Japanese & kanji to be able to do the calligraphy and write my own verses in Japanese. #haiga #haiku #sumi-e #painting #poetry #zenart #japaneseart
A sumi-e style artwork with mostly black and grey shades. A bare, twisty branch is lit by a red sun that's represented by a half ensō. A bird is sitting on the branch, looking up, giving the nice visual of it seemingly staring at the bright red sun. The bird itself has not many details to it, surely no identifiable species, but it is a small bird, maybe a swallow.

There is a haiku by Kobayashi Issa in Japanese kanji, romaji & english.

.在合の鳥も初声上にけり
ariai no tori mo hatsu koe age ni keri

from this bird
the year's first song
rises

So happy to see a new haiku, Dick-- I miss you! This one is inspired by early spring (microseason 11) when the first thunderstorms begin to roll in with spring rains and new tadpoles :)

"Being a poet isn't a matter of pride..." —Eugenio Montale (tr. Jonathan Galassi) #poem #poems #poetry
It's Only An Error

Clowns got up as poets,
arrogant bureaucrats,
pedantic criers,
you are the standard-bearers:
carrying faded colors.
Being a poet isn't a matter of pride.
It's only an error of nature.
A burden to be shouldered
with fear.

First time painting a sparrow. For the hundredth time, I've to remind myself I can't just get good at it without trying first. I've long put off painting birds because I fear I'd never be capable of doing it. But f that. #painting #sparrow #birds #sumi-e #birdart

This starless image of the Andromeda galaxy is definitely one of my best, and one of the few I can enlarge and get lost in the detail.
An oblique view of a large spiral galaxy, seen as an elongated wavy oval of creamy white color, fading away at the edges, with strands of darker brownish dust lanes, and a bright center. There is one small round dwarf satellite galaxy to the right of center , compact and bright with fuzzy edges, and another, further away to the upper left, larger and oblong and fuzzier. all against a black, starless background.

what’s a novel good for, really? here’s an incredible answer by Ralph Ellison
ous individual amid the stagnated society had to suggest to men who came later and who chose the novel as a means of exploring reality. It is the very nature of this exploration which attracts me to the novel, and which causes me to take it very seriously. I can say this without any reference to my personal abilities, which are limited. The novel is a form which deals with change in human personality and human society, bringing to the surface those values, patterns of conduct and dilemmas, psychological and technological, which abide within the human predicament. It can abstract, from the flow and fury of exis-tence, these patterns, which are abiding, and re-create them in the forms of artistic models that can be controlled and imbued with the personal values of the writer, down even to the last punctuation mark. In other words, the novel is a way of possessing life, slowing it down, and giving it the writer's own sense of values in a delicately and subtly structured way. All this, of course, is not simply a matter of entertaining, but is a way of confronting reality, the nature of the soul and the nature of society. As a form, the novel permits a writer
to survive the consequences of encountering the chaos he must
reckon with when he attempts to deal with the basic truths of human existence.
