Cattle is a reservoir of #Cryptosporidium parvum, one of the species causing outbreaks. This #AEM article used a One Health approach to demonstrate a high risk of contracting cryptosporidiosis among veterinary students examining fecal samples from calves. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Veterinary Students Have a Higher Risk of Contracting Cryptosporidiosis when Calves with High Fecal Cryptosporidium Loads Are Used for Fetotomy Exercises | Applied and Environmental Microbiology
Cryptosporidium spp. can cause severe diarrhea in infected individuals. Cryptosporidium parvum is zoonotic, and cattle are the main reservoir. In several countries, outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis have occurred in veterinary students after handling calves. We carried out a 1-year-long prospective study to investigate the occurrence of these recurrent cryptosporidiosis outbreaks in Denmark. Our investigation used a One Health approach and combined comprehensive epidemiological approaches and laboratory methods applied to both students and calves in the setting of the fetotomy exercises. Two outbreaks took place during the study period; additionally, we retrospectively identified two more suspected outbreaks prior to the study period. The results illustrated a high risk of contracting cryptosporidiosis among veterinary students in the setting of the fetotomy exercises, especially when using calves with high fecal Cryptosporidium loads. Our data can be used to inform future efforts to prevent transmission of Cryptosporidium parvum to students during fetotomy exercises.

Little is known about about the population structures of the infective species of #Cryptosporidium. This #AEM article suggests a flexible reproductive strategy characterized by the cooccurrence of both clonal and panmictic propagation. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

Inferences about the Global Population Structures of Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis | Applied and Environmental Microbiology
ABSTRACT Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis are two related species of apicomplexan protozoa responsible for the majority of human cases of cryptosporidiosis. In spite of their considerable public health impact, little is known about the population structures of these species. In this study, a battery of C. parvum and C. hominis isolates from seven countries was genotyped using a nine-locus DNA subtyping scheme. To assess the existence of geographical partitions, the multilocus genotype data were mined using a cluster analysis based on the nearest-neighbor principle. Within each country, the population genetic structures were explored by combining diversity statistical tests, linkage disequilibrium, and eBURST analysis. For both parasite species, a quasi-complete phylogenetic segregation was observed among the countries. Cluster analysis accurately identified recently introduced isolates. Rather than conforming to a strict paradigm of either a clonal or a panmictic population structure, data are consistent with a flexible reproductive strategy characterized by the cooccurrence of both propagation patterns. The relative contribution of each pattern appears to vary between the regions, perhaps dependent on the prevailing ecological determinants of transmission.

Habitat heterogeneity drives microbial community assembly and functional specialization in extremely arid ecosystems | Applied and Environmental Microbiology
Understanding microbial adaptation in hyperarid environments is crucial for predicting ecosystem responses to extreme stressors. This study provides an integrative framework linking environmental heterogeneity to microbial community assembly and metabolic specialization across diverse habitats in one of Earth’s driest basins. Our findings demonstrate that deterministic environmental filtering dominates community assembly in deserts and moderately saline lakes, whereas stochastic processes prevail in wastelands and hypersaline systems. Habitat‑specific metabolic specialization is evident, with nitrogen cycling being key in terrestrial soils and sulfur metabolism central to saline lakes. By significantly improving the recovery of uncultured diversity through targeted strategies, this study bridges a major gap between molecular surveys and cultivable microorganisms. These findings advance ecological theory on community assembly and offer a model for studying microbial resilience and functional evolution under extreme aridity.
