A beautiful sunny morning at Roker. Still quite cool in the water though (14.5 deg C) & has probably already peaked for the year.

Quick trip to Bishop Auckland - very pretty & posh but also slightly derelict in places. Most tourist attractions *very* expensive & not child- friendly, but viewing tower & deer park were great.

The bijou Oriental Museum in Durham is definitely one of my favourites. A great collection, really thoughtfully & atmospherically displayed. Also very good for kids.
Fragment of Ancient Egyptian mummy mask from Roman era, in a very lifelike style.

It surprises me when I notice signs like this in 2026 (and they are still everywhere if you look). You'd think people would scrub away these reminders at the first opportunity, but for some reason that don't / can't.

SAFC posted Ramadan Mubarak earlier on FB and people whinged so much they had to post a "Peaceful Lent" message. But I don't remember anyone who wasn't a priest *ever* saying that to me before - surely it's not a thing?

Surprise gastronomic discovery today - delicious pupusas (stuffed tacos) the national dish of El Salvador, from a tiny takeaway that's just opened on Holmeside, Sunderland.

Enjoyed the new SpongeBob movie. Partly cos the soundtrack features Holiday in Cambodia by the Dead Kennedys, one of the first 7" singles I ever loved. Instrumental version too so no lyrical cringe 👍

To Durham this evening for the last ever Lumiere. Maybe it's gilding the lily, but I thought the cathedral was spectacular & well worth the 25 minute queue.

Half my holiday reading. Pandemic settings helped me remember some unpleasant stuff I forgot (COVID years mostly quite fuzzy for me). Some nice geographical resonances (lived nearby for a while & married in Bournville). An enjoyable, thought-provoking & sometimes moving novel, with some clunky bits.

Breaking our journey with a nostalgic stop in Brum. Stayed in a slightly dystopian Premier Inn in Dale End, surrounded by boarded-up offices, a derelict B&M, towering decrepit apartment blocks, a rank NCP & Scruffy Murphy's (Birmingham's premier rock bar).

These amazing crisps have sharply divided opinion in my house. Somehow they have precisely replicated the taste of *fried* egg without any egg in the ingredients list. A gastronomic triumph!
