...The Smarties (US) / Rockets (CAN) candies on this cover worked for me as a visual representation that this was a collection of several stories, something that stuck with me and that I've attempted to do when designing covers for short story collections...

The word 'daemonlogy' came up in conversation with my son today and I'm reminded of one of the book covers that really inspired me to do this professionally: Paul Sahre's design for Rick Moody's Demonology...

Off to press! The Library Cosmic by Ben Berman Ghan for @wolsakandwynn.bsky.social. Whenever I can, I include some visual reference to the idea of a 'group' of some kind when designing a cover for a collection of stories. This one is no exception.

May the 4th be with you! Back in 1997, as a fledgling designer I was thrilled to redesign Star Wars Insider magazine (complete with recreating the 'Star Wars' logo in Macromedia Freehand). Creating a collage around the Lucasfilm provided Special Edition medallion felt like peak Photoshop!

And you're absolutely right. Wordpress --> Format --> Adobe Portfolio --> Wordpress over the course of 17 years. Feels good to have a portfolio that's truly portable should I ever need to change hosts.

Thanks, Jill. Fortunately it was a simple site to recreate, so even a neophyte like myself was able to handle block editor :)

Happy Pub Day to THE EVIDENCE IS LIFE by Anne E. Pfister! Visit our website for more information on the book, including how you can get your copy: gupress.gallaudet.edu/Books/T/The-... Cover design by @michelvrana.com ✨📚👌 #NewBook #ReadUP

Cover of The Evidence Is Life is centered with a thin black border. Cover description: Background of multicolored rectangles with contrasting uppercase text that makes up the title, subtitle, and author’s name. From top to bottom, the text of the title rezo students with short spiky hair and their backs to the camera. To the right of “Is Life” is an image of two students chatting in a courtyard. Below that on the left is a self-portrait of a student holding a camera in front of his face, where he is framed by a mirror with a brick wall in the background. To the right of the photo is the subtitle: DEAF PILGRIMAGES TO LANGUAGE AND COMMUNITY IN MEXICO CITY. Below the subtitle is the author’s name: ANNE E. PFISTER. In the background of the graphic are the same students who appear on the cover.

The radio was playing at my 85 yo Dad’s place earlier and his ears perked up and he said “I love this song!” He didn’t know the name or the artist. I pulled out Shazam since I didn’t recognize it either. Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan.

File under: I never thought it would be an issue until I tried. Adobe Illustrator has no trouble exporting a PDF with layers intact, but importing the same PDF reduces everything to one layer. Affinity Publisher roundtrips the file just fine.
