When I signed up to work on unemployment insurance, I didn't realize we'd be battling plagues and self-aware robots.

Feel like this should be mandatory reading for those of us trying to figure out what to do with the mass unemployment risk here.

Initial claims just came out - another low of 197,000. Insured unemployment is just 1.1% when the latest unemployment figure is 4.1%. Because UI is so terrible in so many places, it is not serving as the workforce attachment tool it is supposed to. I expect disappointing LFP numbers next week.

010

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

Remember: initial claims only measures who lost work AND THEN decided to apply for UI. There is a very weak link here; whether folks know about UI and think it is worth applying for. Paper coming out soon on max weekly benefits being insufficient, making it not worth applying for for many.

001

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

This week's initial unemployment claims of 197,000 isn't good news. Last week's 196k was revised up to 198k, but we are still looking at historically low numbers in people applying for UI. Yet jobs reports show low labor force participation. Real evidence that UI isn't working.

I remain disturbed that DOGE politicals got access to that, and more should be done to ensure the data is used solely by OIG for fraud prevention.

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

The final DOL rule on UI data disclosure is out. Topline for me: "State UC agencies are largely already disclosing the information that this final rule codifies to the Department and DOL-OIG, minimizing any new costs." Seems like no new data disclosure.

The US DOL just repealed the requirement that has been in place since the 1930s that staff for the Employment Service be selected on the basis of merit. Here is a very long treatise on why those rules existed and why it is a terrible idea to eliminate them: tcf.org/content/repo...

Why are people dropping out of the labor force? Unemployment insurance is a pain to get, so no longer serves as a tether for folks, and something like a third of all jobs advertised are fake.

We no longer have UI as a countercyclical stabilizer in the US. If there is mass job displacement due to AI or due to the AI bubble bursting, it's going to take the rest of the economy with it.

010

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 30/07/2026

Initial claims for unemploymnet this week were 197,000. HIgher than last week, but still below 200,000. It is clear that the economy is not great and people are suffering, but they are still not applying for UI. This should be a wakeup call that we need this program to work.

Business and professional services continue to trend up, while the Black youth unemployment rate is 26.8%. (It was 18.5% in March.) This is why we need to focus on addressing unemployment more broadly, not on a targeted AI-displacement focus.

Finally, worth noting that California hasn't increased the maximum weekly benefit since 1983. My heart goes out to unemployed folks there.

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 17/06/2026

Innocent claimants put out of work - often by this administration's policies - are the real victims here. If we see mass layoffs due to AI or that AI bubble bursting, major sections of our economy will lack a macroeconomic stabilizer.

100

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 17/06/2026

Bad actors have access to AI and other tools to hit states. This calls for a whole of government/whole of society response. If they think these criminals are going to stop at UI, they are mistaken. Taking away state admin dollars does not fix the problem.

110

Michele Evermore @micheleevermore.bsky.social · 17/06/2026

This administration is trying to absolve itself of its responsibility to work with states to get them the tools they need to fight highly coordinated international criminals perpetrating increasingly sophisticated attacks. (thread below)

When this is all over, I propose we establish a fund to pay damages to those illegally harmed by ICE, funded by assets seized from those responsible, and if they are no longer alive, their estates. Similar to what we did for Japanese American internees, but not 50 years later.
