Our group of canvassers out Saturday knocking doors from Kennesaw to downtown Marietta ahead of Tuesday's special election for Cobb County Commission District 2 and District 4. Almost everyone we talked to committed to going out and voting, and we even signed up a few new volunteers.

By 1980, when his presidency ended, Carter had completely transformed the federal bench, appointing 41 women and 57 racial minorities as federal judges—a 500% increase in the number of women serving on the federal bench and a nearly 200% increase in the number of nonwhite federal judges.

Please remember that President Carter appointed more minorities and women to the bench than all previous presidents combined. He was the first President to embrace the concept of bringing racial diversity to the federal bench. A key aspect of his legacy. www.washingtonpost.com/archive/poli...

The nearly 10-foot-long probe has made 22 orbits around the sun, allowing it to swoop ever deeper into the corona. And while doing so, the spacecraft has been continually picking up speed. On this close flyby, the probe reached some 430,000 miles/hour making it the fastest human-made object ever.

Sometimes working with manuscripts gets us really, really close to the people from the past allowing us to hear their voices. This is a story of a letter from a schoolgirl to her teacher, written probably sometime at the end of the 9th or the beginning of the 10th century. A thread 🧵 #medievalsky /1
A faint writing, the text is in Latin and it reads: Domina magistra felhin date mihi licenciam in hac nocte vigilare cum magistra adalu et ego vobis ambabus manibus confirmo atque iuro ut per totam noctem declinare volo aut legere aut pro seniore nostro cantare Valete et ut peto facite. The very first second of a powerful eruption of Volcán de Fuego, bathed in golden light by the rising Sun. Shot at close range via drone at nearly 13,000 ft.
An image shot from my drone, looking down at the conical summit of the Fuego volcano in Guatemala. A powerful eruption has just started, with an ash cloud rapidly rising and expanding above the summit. Several boulders are launched high above the cloud. The left half of the mountain and cloud are bathed in rich golden light from the Sun that has just risen above the horizon. The right side is cast in shadow. In the distance, thousands of feet below the action, lush green forest is just barely visible.

A lot of orgs tout winning %s of the candidates they endorse. But this post sings the praises of an org (Fighting 50) that endorsed NO winning candidates in 2024. Their state house candidates ran in unwinnable red districts in GA and bucked the red shift in swing states.

There are a lot of approaches we can take to reduce maternal mortality in Georgia. Disbanding a panel of experts focused on examining pregnancy-related deaths is not one of them. Our state is among the worst for maternal mortality & almost half our counties have no obgyn. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Widening roadways has a consistently paradoxical effect: it increases total travel time for everyone in the area. For every 10% increase in drivable distance added, there's a 3-10% increase in vehicle miles traveled. It's called the "induced travel effect". Let's talk about it.
A diagram labeled conceptual illustration of the induced travel effect in response to roadway capacity expansion.

Gen X, NOT 'Boomers', are the generation with the highest lead levels in childhood & the highest IQ loss as a result. On average, someone born between 1966 and 1970 lost 5.9 IQ points due to lead exposure, 1970-1975, 5.1 points. Half of children tested in 1976 were 4X the CDC's 'action threshold'.
From "Half of US population exposed to adverse lead levels in early childhood"
"Changes in the distribution of childhood BLLs by age (A and C) and over time (B and D). The absolute distribution of BLLs experienced in childhood for US adults in 2015 (A) and the relative distribution (C). The absolute distribution of BLLs (B) and the relative distribution for the entire population over time for the period 1940 to 2100 (D). More than 90% of those born between 1950 and 1980 experienced BLLs in excess of 5 µg/dL, the threshold considered “safe” for children. The legacy of early life lead exposure will stay in the United States for decades to come."
