Maybe Milo knew about the hearing. Maybe he deliberately avoided it. Maybe he showed up late. Or early – but not early enough for the judge. (Yes, that happens.) Whatever the reason, he now has limited options – just like so many of the people he spent years agitating against.

Why the rush? Courts are under pressure to reduce an unsustainable backlog. But the broken rules that helped create that backlog remain: noncitizens have very limited ways to obtain lawful status. So the system is trying to process people faster without fixing the bottleneck.

Wow. Influential 2010s-era hard-right figure overstayed his visa in 2019. #Milo missed his immigration hearing on July 22 and was ordered removed “in absentia.” Now he’s in #ICE custody. And in absentia orders are up because courts are rushing hearings, which means less notice.
