Weird facts you run across: at the height of Escobar's cocaine empire in Colombia, his cartel was buying $1,000 (USD) of rubber bands just to wrap all the cash EVERY WEEK. They also accepted a 10% loss of cash to rats and other animals in the warehouses where they stored all the $$$. (1/2)

Bloch was WWI vet & pathbreaking historian. He fought at Dunkirk, got to the UK, and was refused admission to USA. He returned to France, wrote one of most important WWII memoirs then joined FR Resistance. Nazis murdered him in 1944 bc he was Jewish. He will now rightly enter the Panthéon.

Just heard paper: in last ten years workers are spending 288% more time on email; 200% more on Teams et al; 624 more hours annually filling in forms and 210 more hours annually in training. This “toil” is an increasing reason people are leaving jobs. They can’t do their mission because of the toil.

Assuming this poll is not an outlier, it does confirm what many German friends have been telling me: that there is more stomach in Germany for defense spending than most mainstream politicians believe. Will be interesting to see how defense plays as an issue in German elections in March.

Came here to avoid toxicity of X, but even on here (& Threads) soc media reveals how many people wd gladly sit by and watch or even cheer as millions of Israelis (and non-Israeli Jews) went to their deaths. Some are reposts from X but the pervasiveness of the sentiment is truly astonishing to see.

This line from the FT article hits the nail directly on the head. In the minds of most Israelis and most Jews I know, this is not one isolated attack. The common use of word "pogrom" to describe Hamas's murders connects it to a long line of attacks like this from a wide variety of enemies over time.

I was on the #Israel #Gaza border in August (that's a Hamas lookout point in the square behind the security wall). Was also in 2 of towns attacked today. I cannot stress how hard it will be to deescalate or how many 2d/3d order effects this will produce even if people of good intention come forward.
