Excuse the geek-out: one of the things I love most about the @carleton.ca campus is the wildlife we often catch a glimpse of. Here is a red-tailed hawk in the middle of campus this morning, perched high up projecting its raspy, menacing kee-ee-aw call. Last week, it was an osprey.

Is “values-based realism” a strategy—or just defensive tactics? In the @theglobeandmail.com, I argue that ad hoc coalitions are useful in a crisis, but cannot substitute for institutions. Multilateralism isn’t wishful thinking; it’s hard-nosed strategy. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

Opinion: Ad hoc coalitions aren’t going to cut it for Canada in the new world order
The Carney government is orienting Canada’s foreign policy toward ‘plurilateral’ coalitions. But these still need to be backed by a UN willing to perform its peace and security role

Is "values-based realism" the right path for Canada? @MarkJCarney & @alexstubb push ad hoc coalitions, but it's a false choice. A realistic foreign policy demands effective multilateralism, not retreat. Check out my latest in @policymag.bsky.social www.policymagazine.ca/the-false-ch...

PM @mark-carney.bsky.social speech yesterday made clear: we’re in a period of rupture, not transition. Middle powers can’t rely on old assumptions. Much of the analysis closely echoes an argument Lloyd Axworthy, Allan Rock, and I made last year in Policy. www.policymagazine.ca/the-time-has...

Amid volatility, it’s tempting to respond with outrage. Stoics remind us that leadership is about clarity, discipline, & principle. Focusing on what we control. In @foreignpolicy.com, I explore how Stoicism can inform foreign policy today. There is a reason these ideas have survived for 2000+ years

Saddened to hear of the passing of Pope Francis. His pontificate was truly transformational. His climate advocacy & encyclical, Laudato Si, influenced the Paris Climate Conference. His emphasis on the poor and marginalized was a reminder to a world increasingly turning its back on them.

This is absolutely worth a read. The risks of nuclear confrontation grow by the day and the institutions of arms control are withering. The world urgently needs to strengthen its disarmament diplomacy. We should not give in to cynicism.

ICYMI: I have a new article out on Canada & the Trump admin. On Europe/NATO, climate, and nuclear disarmament, the new admin risks forcing allies to choose between the US & the order it helped create. I argue Canada should work with friends to reinforce multilateral norms, rules, and institutions.
