Usual challenge of treating education and training separate from the labour market. The young person's minimum wage for under 18 is 40% of the adult (over 21) in the Netherlands. UK it is 63%. Not about paying young people less, more recognising they need more support. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

What the Dutch can teach the UK about tackling youth unemployment
The Netherlands has one of the world's lowest rates of 16 to 24-year-olds not in education, employment or training.

What I find depressing is the complete absence of demand side levers. I.e. mandate levels of training of apprentices in key roles. Otherwise, sectors will always turn to migration or failures in the 'supply side' as the reason for a lack of skills.Who will build Britain? - on.ft.com/3XbdRqu via @FT

Travelling through a UK regional airport this evening is a metaphor for the UK's productivity challenge. There is no shortage of staff, but all working within a palpable lack of investment in facilities and infrastructure.

Lack of clout and urgency for whom? Always the presumption of supply side failings, which the state can choose to fix since it can have any levers it wants. Whereas the demand side passes quietly by. Labour’s skills strategy under fire for lack of ‘clout’ and urgency - on.ft.com/4fGHYO1 via @FT
