Jackson Herndon interviews Michael Lazarus about his book "Absolute Ethical Life." They discuss Marx's Aristotelian-Hegelian ethics, Arendt's and MacIntyre's concepts of the ethical, and the enduring significance of "species-being" to Marx. @michaellazarus.bsky.social @stanfordpress.bsky.social

"'Men make their own history, but,' this phrase echoes through the Marxist classics. The political aim of Marxists is to liquidate that 'but'. Their theoretical aim is to understand it. /1

Did I mention that ABSOLUTE ETHICAL LIFE includes a terrific chapter on Alasdair MacIntyre?!? "[MacIntyre’s] journey from Marxism is less a reactionary departure and more a story of his thinking through of modernity in terms already indicated in his earlier Marxist work."

Michael Lazarus @michaellazarus.bsky.social · 23/05/2025
The project that eventually became Absolute Ethical Life was initially going to be an assessment of Alasdair MacIntyre's relationship to Marx's thought. In the book, there's a dedicated chapter to MacIntyre but throughout he's always very close to the concerns at hand:

"The separation of morality from history, from desire discovered through the discovery of that common human nature which history shows as emerging, leaves morality without any basis." Alasdair MacIntyre's "Notes From the Moral Wilderness."

"What emerges from Marx’s Capital is an account of capitalism as a form of life which is constituted by social relations of domination that restrict in fundamental ways the ability of human beings to recognise each other as free and rational beings in a social world of our own creation."
