#photography #andrekertesz Andre Kertesz’s photographs have a distinctly elegant sensibility. His lifelong dedication to expressive photography is reflected in his immense and varied body of work. The online gallery at the National Gallery of Art provides a nice overview: www.nga.gov/collection/a...

This is a black and white photograph made in Hungary in 1917 by Andre Kertesz. It shows an outstretched male swimmer in stripped trunks beneath the water surface. He almost touches both sides of the frame from top left to lower right. This distorted figure is set against the irregular patterns that sunlight passing through the water make on the bottom of the pool.

This is a sepia toned black and white photograph made by Andre Kertesz in Paris in 1926. It shows the pipe and glasses of the painter Piet Mondrian. The pipe is sitting in a bowl and the two pairs of open round rimmed glasses are arranged on the left side of the bowl. These objects sit on a light toned table against a black background. The corner of the table extends to the top left of frame.

This is a black and white photograph titled American Gothic. It was made by Gordon Parks in 1942. After experiencing blatant racism in Washington DC, Parks made an extensive photo survey of Ella Watson, her family and their experiences living and working in our nation's capitol. The series culminated with this photograph - which shows Watson, an older African American woman, looking directly into the camera, holding a mop and broom, and standing in front of an American flag. The photograph evokes the Grant Wood painting of the same title.

This is a color photograph titled "Department Store." It was made by Gordon Parks in Mobile, Alabama in 1956. The photograph shows a fashionably dressed African American woman and her young daughter standing beneath a bright red neon sign that reads "COLORED ENTRANCE." This photograph was part a Life Magazine story about American segregation and is also included in the photo book titled "Gordon Parks, Segregation Story" publish by Steidl.

W. Eugene Smith's body of work is filled with iconic images that speak with conscience and compassion. The Magnum Photos agency has a wide ranging collection of his work online. www.magnumphotos.com/photographer... #photography #weugenesmith #eugenesmith

This is a black and white photograph titled Three Welsh Miners. It was made by W. Eugene Smith in 1950. It shows three soot faced men in the lower right of frame, all looking to the right. In the distance behind them, filling the width of the top of the frame, are rows of worker housing.

This is a black and white photograph titled Spanish Wake. It was made by W. Eugene Smith in 1950. It is part of Smith's Life Magazine photo essay titled Spanish Village, made in the village of Deleitosa. The photo shows a male corpse in the lower left of frame with a group of six women gathered next to the body filling the center and right of frame. The photograph is classically composed and achieves a high contrast chiaroscuro effect in the lighting.

This is black and white photograph made by W. Eugene Smith in 1955. It is one of over 16,000 (some say 17,000) photographs Smith made in his quest to fully capture the city and its people.
