Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 02/10/2026There's always somebody losing their composure at the post office. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I had the owner of a community bookstore reject my zine, telling me zines come and go and she has no place for them. I wasn't offended. I will continue to speak well of the shop. No accounting for people. 011
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Book Beat. Or send $5 (or anything really) to me at P. O. Box 2146, Detroit, MI 48202 010
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 21/09/2026My zine is a critical success. Which is a very nice way of saying it is losing money. But I don't care. I'm doing a second issue anyway. 110
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 17/09/2026A century ago, various designs were submitted for a new City Hall for Detroit. This one is a fantasy of giantism. Ultimately, no new City Hall would be built until the international style municipal center built in the 1950s. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 11/08/2026I gotta say, even though my other stuff -- my newsroom job, my book, my column -- is all going well, doing a zine has been equally exciting. I missed the Johnny Appleseed quality of it, how much I enjoy being a Mr. 880 of publishing. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 24/07/2026I also left a display and copies at Trinosophes on Gratiot Avenue. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 24/07/2026For those averse to money orders, stamps, mail and other old-fashioned folderol, the zine DETROIT WILL BREAK YOUR HEART is now available at Book Beat in Oak Park, Michigan. 100
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 18/07/2026Take a chance: Fold $5 and your address into an envelope and mail it to MM Jackman, PO Box 2146, Detroit MI 48202 221
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I spent my time working, alone or with the boy. So when I have small conversations with other adults I find them so exciting they leave me smiling and thinking about them. 010
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 15/06/2026The tot can ride a bike, just like his older brother, at a young age. Was about to congratulate us on their accomplishment, then realized kids just get right-sized bikes younger today. It was an inconvenient capital expense for my Silent Generation parents. They waited. Our kids go early. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 10/06/2026I worked across the street at the Strand in the 1990s. I always felt the need to be on my best behavior at FP. Judgment began as soon as one walked toward the store, just past our dollar bins. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I am starting the unofficial Argument of the Month Club, and will edit the quarterly publication, No You Don't! 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I am spending a lot of time with the tot watching Mikey and JJ. He let me watch part of a Popeye cartoon yesterday, but he has firm limits. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Is it normal to wake up one morning and everybody seems different, like they have always eaten other people and cannibalism is normal. What's wrong with you? 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 08/06/2026The fascination in Michigan with "Hell" is obnoxious. First of all, it's really only a place name. There is no township or board of commissioners. It's a crossroads where bikers and other similar goofs gather to say they've been to Hell and back. Like a town thrown up by Kid Rock. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 04/06/2026I didn't want to own a 20-year-old Jaguar, but I love the way some of the old guys in the neighborhood nod at me now. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 26/05/2026I'm surprised it's so visual. Reminds me of the Rev. Claude Williams "orientation charts" 060

Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 22/05/2026Real wins for the nation are nice. But I'll take celebrating the man losing too. 100
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 22/05/2026Earlier this year, we were celebrating our 5-year-old's birthday and couldn't go outside because a demolition was taking place. I wonder what sort of soil is in there now. I don't let the kid play there a lot. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 22/05/2026Today I am at home writing. Looking forward to it. I have some good ideas and some scut work, I'll alternate. Writing at home is my eventual goal. Well, with less clutter and fewer gnats :P 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 22/05/2026Duggan was always sophisticated. Calling it off at the Thursday cutoff was the best place to dump the news. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 21/05/2026I was so tired last night I couldn't muster the energy to attend the awards banquet. I blame my chronic sobriety. 010
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Maybe Michigan politics were starting to get too real? P clear Duggan wanted to be a dealmaker, cutting ribbons and presiding over things. Mostly didn't want to lose. 010

Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 15/05/2026Then it does the same things next door, blowing all the dust back onto the other lot. And snaps another CUTE PICTURE! HERE'S YOUR BILL! 010
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 15/05/2026I think leaf blowers are a perfect metaphor for something. The crew comes and actually DIRTIES the air by blowing out exhaust from a 2-stroke engine, FOULS the air by filling it with dust, BLASTS OUT NOISE for a LONG TIME, then snaps a cute picture of it ALL CLEAN! 210

Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 14/05/2026The system sometimes sips tea with a fly, then spits the fly out. This is because fishing a fly out of the tea makes everybody aware what you're doing. By carefully sipping in the fly and then spitting the fly out, few question what happened. 110

Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026When I was a kid, I didn't understand how the country could lose a war and then spend 20 years arguing about how it happened. Now that this country is losing multiple wars, I imagine people will argue about it for 120 years. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026We're getting quite a show on our front walk this year. 120
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026I read many old newspaper articles about suicide and their connection to chronic poverty is undeniable. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026I dunno. Detroit police hated Muslims in the 1930s because it was a color-blind credo that attracted African-Americans. But otherwise yes 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026As so today "caving fatality" enter my lexicon. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026When I first met my stepson, his first words to me were "Go fuck yourself." In the last 11 years, he has moved on to, "Why don't you just go kill yourself?" I think he it shows how much he has grown. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026I think Lewis Mumford argued that the aesthetics of the era of wood and water were better because the people designing the world lived in it. When people started mining, the entire culture began to take on that mentality, leaving the world, entering a place where even light had to be synthesized. 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026I think I need a new browser. I can't deal with MSN as my "homepage" ugh. It's like the old WOMEN'S SECTION 000
Michael M. Jackman @michaeljackman.bsky.social · 12/05/2026I am not ashamed of who I am. I'm out here trying. Sure is tough, though. 000
