There's always somebody losing their composure at the post office.

I had the owner of a community bookstore reject my zine, telling me zines come and go and she has no place for them. I wasn't offended. I will continue to speak well of the shop. No accounting for people.

My zine is a critical success. Which is a very nice way of saying it is losing money. But I don't care. I'm doing a second issue anyway.

A century ago, various designs were submitted for a new City Hall for Detroit. This one is a fantasy of giantism. Ultimately, no new City Hall would be built until the international style municipal center built in the 1950s.

I gotta say, even though my other stuff -- my newsroom job, my book, my column -- is all going well, doing a zine has been equally exciting. I missed the Johnny Appleseed quality of it, how much I enjoy being a Mr. 880 of publishing.

For those averse to money orders, stamps, mail and other old-fashioned folderol, the zine DETROIT WILL BREAK YOUR HEART is now available at Book Beat in Oak Park, Michigan.

I spent my time working, alone or with the boy. So when I have small conversations with other adults I find them so exciting they leave me smiling and thinking about them.

The tot can ride a bike, just like his older brother, at a young age. Was about to congratulate us on their accomplishment, then realized kids just get right-sized bikes younger today. It was an inconvenient capital expense for my Silent Generation parents. They waited. Our kids go early.

Is it normal to wake up one morning and everybody seems different, like they have always eaten other people and cannibalism is normal. What's wrong with you?

The fascination in Michigan with "Hell" is obnoxious. First of all, it's really only a place name. There is no township or board of commissioners. It's a crossroads where bikers and other similar goofs gather to say they've been to Hell and back. Like a town thrown up by Kid Rock.

Earlier this year, we were celebrating our 5-year-old's birthday and couldn't go outside because a demolition was taking place. I wonder what sort of soil is in there now. I don't let the kid play there a lot.

Today I am at home writing. Looking forward to it. I have some good ideas and some scut work, I'll alternate. Writing at home is my eventual goal. Well, with less clutter and fewer gnats :P

Maybe Michigan politics were starting to get too real? P clear Duggan wanted to be a dealmaker, cutting ribbons and presiding over things. Mostly didn't want to lose.

I think leaf blowers are a perfect metaphor for something. The crew comes and actually DIRTIES the air by blowing out exhaust from a 2-stroke engine, FOULS the air by filling it with dust, BLASTS OUT NOISE for a LONG TIME, then snaps a cute picture of it ALL CLEAN!

The system sometimes sips tea with a fly, then spits the fly out. This is because fishing a fly out of the tea makes everybody aware what you're doing. By carefully sipping in the fly and then spitting the fly out, few question what happened.

When I was a kid, I didn't understand how the country could lose a war and then spend 20 years arguing about how it happened. Now that this country is losing multiple wars, I imagine people will argue about it for 120 years.

When I first met my stepson, his first words to me were "Go fuck yourself." In the last 11 years, he has moved on to, "Why don't you just go kill yourself?" I think he it shows how much he has grown.

I think Lewis Mumford argued that the aesthetics of the era of wood and water were better because the people designing the world lived in it. When people started mining, the entire culture began to take on that mentality, leaving the world, entering a place where even light had to be synthesized.

I remember being about 17 when I thought, "Man, the people in charge just aren't trying. I can't believe them." They said it was now the Information Age, and "we will retrain the workers." I just remember thinking, "Bullschitt. What have they planned for us?"

In Detroit, police sometimes banned books. Was this how it was done in other U.S. cities? When a work was "banned in Boston," under what authority did that happen?

Alex Cockburn said MIke Royko was a drunken fraud, but I loved that story about his employed complaining to him he was the last guy smoking at his desk. He said, fine, I'll quit. And he did. He walked out of the newspaper and went to its competitor, who never bothered him about his ashtray.

The elevator has been broken so long people are now unapologetically taking the forbidden "freight" elevator. I joined a group of them today and kept teasing everybody about how we were rulebreakers. I annoyed them a bit, I think. Just seeing people take power for themselves is so exciting!

Automatically disbelieve anybody who says they found a highlighted (bookmarked, random) page in the (family) bible (kept in a basement, attic, or other weird place) that told them to do something. It is bullshit and this person is always scary.
