This striking presentation celebrates the contemporary renaissance of Japanese bridal attire curated by CUCURU, an exclusive Tokyo-based boutique renowned for revolutionizing traditional wedding styling (kitsuke) for modern brides.
Standing with her back to the viewer against a soft, sky-blue studio horizon, a bride poses in a majestic, ceremonial uchikake outer robe from the couture house CUCURU, her arms extended to display the full, sweeping canvas of the textile. The garment unfolds in a breathtaking crescendo of traditional auspicious motifs: a vibrant crimson upper field filled with soaring white cranes (tsuru), blooming cherry blossoms (sakura), and chrysanthemums (kiku), cascading seamlessly down into rich gold brocade, pine fronds (matsu), imperial carts (goshoguruma), and a padded, ink-black hem (fuki) trailing across the floor. Her hair is styled in a sleek, modern updo adorned with intricate, silver-and-gold floral hair ornaments (kanzashi). The ensemble awakens a deeply opulent sensory landscape: the heavy, reassuring weight of padded silk trailing across polished floors, the crisp rustle of gold-lame thread (kinshi) gliding over woven Jacquard ground, the subtle scent of paulownia storage chests and delicate hair wax, and the dazzling flash of metallic embroidery catching soft studio light.
The uchikake—an unbelted, heavily padded outer robe worn over a kakeashita (under-kimono) during formal wedding ceremonies—originated during the Muromachi and Edo periods as the formal winter court dress of high-ranking samurai and noblewomen. The motifs woven and embroidered across this garment are rich in auspicious symbolism (kisshō moyō): pairs of cranes represent lifelong marital fidelity and longevity, evergreen pine symbolizes enduring strength through all seasons, and the imperial flower cart evokes prosperity and aristocratic elegance.

Traditional Okinawa dance. The kimonos here are very different than in the main Japanese islands to the north. This performance captures the distinct cultural lineage of Ryūkyū Buyō (classical Okinawan dance), a courtly art form nurtured under the sovereign Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th thru 19th c
Poised in deliberate, fluid motion upon a sun-dappled courtyard path, a classical Ryukyuan dancer performs Yotsudake, her body draped in a radiant, golden-yellow bingata robe patterned with cascading tropical flora, waves, and cloud scrolls. She wears the iconic hanagasa—a monumental, flower-shaped headpiece constructed with overlapping crimson petals rimmed in brilliant cobalt blue wave motifs, echoing the bloom of a hibiscus or lotus floating over the sea. Unbound by the heavy, constricting obi sashes of mainland Honshu, her kimono flows with uninhibited maritime freedom, its wide sleeves lined in shocking scarlet silk that flashes with every turn of her wrists. In her hands, she clicks small, tassel-adorned bamboo castanets (yotsudake), anchoring her graceful steps in a precise, hypnotic rhythm. The scene radiates a vivid sensory atmosphere: the sharp, metallic-like clack-clack of polished bamboo echoing through warm coastal air, the gentle rustle of starch-finished silk and ramie fibers, the faint, salty tang of a Pacific breeze mingling with garden fragrance, and the dazzling intensity of southern sunlight illuminating saturated, pigment-dyed textile motifs.
ormed at the crossroads of East Asian maritime trade routes, Ryukyuan court culture synthesized artistic influences from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia to forge a unique aesthetic identity. The dance Yotsudake was historically showcased during grand state banquets (ukawansen) held at Shuri Castle to entertain visiting Chinese imperial envoys (sapposhi). The dancer’s brilliant yellow robe showcases bingata, Okinawa's premier stencil-dyeing technique where mineral pigments and plant dyes are applied over rice-paste resists; during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, rich yellow grounds were strictly reserved for the royal family and high nobility.

Tsuneyu: Priestess A geiko of Gion Higashi, dancing as a Shinto priestess for a plentiful harvest of rice in early spring. Photography by mboogiedown on Flickr
Poised in a moment of sublime ritual suspension, the geiko Tsuneyu of Kyoto’s Gion Higashi district performs a classical dance portraying a Shinto priestess invoking an early spring blessing for a bountiful rice harvest. She is crowned with a striking, gold-and-black striped ceremonial cap (eboshi) emblazoned with a crimson sun disk, her face enfolded in flawless porcelain-white oshiroi makeup. Over a lime-green silk kimono embroidered with delicate seasonal motifs, she wears a diaphanous, pale yellow gauze mantle (chōken) secured at the chest by thick, vermilion braided silk tassels. In her outstretched right hand, she holds an opened mai-ōgi (dance fan) brilliant with fan-shaped panels of metallic green, cobalt, and gold. The image evokes an exquisite sensory atmosphere: the crisp, wooden snapping sound of a cypress fan opening mid-gesture, the soft rustle of starched silk gauze gliding over heavy brocade, the lingering fragrance of sandalwood incense and paulownia stage wax, and the breathless, electric hush of an audience mesmerized by sacred movement. This performance captures the refined artistic heritage of Gion Higashi, one of Kyoto’s historic hanamachi (flower towns), renowned for preserving the intimate, classical arts of traditional Japanese dance (Nihon Buyō). The dance synthesizes theatrical stagecraft with ancient Shinto agricultural rites (ta-asobi and kagura), wherein priestesses danced to appease regional deities (kami) and ensure fertile soil before the spring rice planting.

Retirement.
I have crawled out at last far as I dare on to a bough of country that is suspended between sky and sea.
From what was I escaping There is a rare peace here, though the aeroplanes buzz me, reminders of that abyss,
deeper than sea or sky, civilisation could fall into. Strangers advance, inching their way out, so that the branch bends
further away from the scent of the cloud blossom. Must I console myself with reflections? There are
times even the mirror
is misted as by one breathing over my shoulder. Clinging to my position, witnessing
the seasonal migrations, I must try to content myself with the perception that love and truth have
no wings, but are resident like me here, practising
their sub-song quietly in the face of the bitterest of winters.

I visited Tipsoo Lake in Mt. Rainier National Park on the hunt for mountain reflections and alpine wildflowers. The cloudy sky prevented any reflections of Mt. Rainier, but I did discover an abundance of wildflowers! This painting captures the beautiful blooms up close, in impressionistic color. Thick brushstrokes of oil paint laid side by side, without layering, create a mosaic or stained-glass appearance in the landscape.

This painting was inspired by a canoe trip down a slow-moving creek in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Tall, overhanging trees lined the banks, enclosing the creek and enveloping it in silence. Gilded Reflections by Erin Hanson, 2026 Oil on canvas 60 x 48 in #oregon #pnw #impressionism #art @bsky.art
This painting was inspired by a canoe trip down a slow-moving creek in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Tall, overhanging trees lined the banks, enclosing the creek and enveloping it in total silence. The water was so still I could see the reflections of the surrounding trees almost mirror-clear in the water. The only thing that disturbed the water's surface was the occasional fish gulping at a bug. While I was painting this work, I felt completely enveloped in the silence and quiet peacefulness of this memory.

I painted this oil painting over 24-karat gold leaf applied directly to the canvas. The gold leaf peeks out between the brushstrokes of the painting, glinting subtly in the changing light, evoking the feel of real water.

"Gilded Reflections" will be on display for The Gold Leaf Show at The Erin Hanson Gallery in McMinnville, Oregon. All are invited to the artist reception on Saturday, November 21st, 2026. (You may purchase the painting now, but it will ship after the exhibition on November 21st.)

Borders
Somewhere beyond time's curve civilisation lifted its glass rim. There was a pretence of light
for nations to walk by through the dark wood, where history wintered. Following I came to the foretold frontier
where with a machine's instinct the guns' nostrils flared at the blooms held out to them by the flower people.

Soaking in hot springs (onsen) holds a central position in Japanese cultural life and wellness heritage, rooted in ancient Shinto traditions of ritual purification (misogi) and the therapeutic practice of tōji (healing bath retreats).
Framed by the dark, angular lines of a gabled timber overhang, an indoor thermal bath (onsen) looks out onto a serene garden radiant with golden autumn maples (momiji). The still, mirror-like surface of the mineral bath water perfectly catches the luminous amber foliage, creating a striking liquid reflection that merges the interior sanctuary with the vibrant autumn landscape. Polished dark stone and warm wood panels line the bathhouse, catching soft reflections of warm ambient light along the pool’s edge. The scene evokes a deeply immersive sensory atmosphere: the soothing warmth of mineral-rich geothermal waters, the subtle aroma of cedar and cypress (hinoki) rising with the steam, the faint whisper of autumn breeze against the glass, and the quiet stillness of an autumn afternoon.
Japanese bathhouses and traditional inns (ryokan) are meticulously engineered to honor kisetsukan—a deep sensitivity to the passing seasons—offering bathers an intimate connection to spring cherry blossoms, summer greens, autumn leaves, or winter snow. Through the architectural technique of shakkei ("borrowed scenery"), master builders frame the surrounding natural landscape into the room's design, blurring the boundary between uchi (inside) and soto (outside). Every detail—from the precision joinery of the timber roof to the seamless stone masonry of the bath—reflects monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material heritage), transforming a daily ritual into a meditative encounter with nature.

Geisha at Gennin-temple in Kyoto, Japan. Photography by Woosra Kim
Bathed in a brilliant shaft of morning light, a maiko advances along the central flagstone pathway (sandō) within the quiet precincts of Kennin-ji in Kyoto. She carries a small, vermilion oil-paper parasol (wagasa), her hair styled in traditional nihongami and adorned with vibrant floral kanzashi hair ornaments that sway with her movement. Her rich teal-green trailing kimono (hikizuri) features intricate, hand-dyed yūzen motifs and a golden brocade obi, catching the light to reveal flashes of brilliant scarlet silk under-layer (hakkako) as she walks atop high, hollow-carved wooden sandals (okobo). Behind her, a magnificent canopy of pale cherry blossoms (sakura) creates a luminous frame around the dark, weathered roof tiles of the temple gate. The photograph evokes an exquisite, sensory atmosphere: the rhythmic pokkuri-pokkuri hollow chime of wooden okobo echoing across smooth stones, the crisp, cool morning air fragrant with delicate spring blossoms, the damp warmth of sunlit granite, and the solemn, undisturbed quietude of an ancient temple at dawn.

Founded in 1202 by the monk Eisai, Kennin-ji stands as Kyoto’s oldest Zen monastery, situated at the immediate threshold where the spiritual grounds meet the historic Gion hanamachi (flower district). The maiko’s presence within this sacred space illustrates the historical interplay between Kyoto's monastic heritage and its refined world of traditional performing arts. Her ensemble represents the pinnacle of Japanese textile and material craftsmanship (monozukuri), from the laborious paste-resist dyeing and gold-leaf embellishment of her silk kimono to the intricate Nishijin-ori weaving of her sash and the hand-carved paulownia wood of her footwear. Each element of her dress is meticulously selected to reflect kisetsukan—a heightened awareness of the current season—aligning her visual presence with the fleeting beauty of early spring cherry blossoms.

Farm near Duivendrecht www.artic.edu/artworks/144467
Though Piet Mondrian is best known for his nonrepresentational paintings, his basic vision was rooted in landscape. He was particularly inspired by the flat topography of his native Holland, a subject he returned to even after he had begun working in an abstract style after attending an exhibition of the Cubist paintings of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso in 1911. Mondrian first sketched this farm around 1905. Nine of the twenty known related paintings and drawings of the farm, however, were created later, during World War I. Mondrian likely returned to the subject because his wartime patrons generally preferred his earlier naturalistic compositions to his recent experiments with Cubism.
