So many people just want one "clever" thing to say about a film Beauty and Beast? Stockholm syndrome Titanic? There was room on the door for Jack Batman movie? Bruce Wayne should do charity instead Never mind if they are the millionth person to make this observation

Why do Bake-Off contestants persist in putting harsh artificial flavors in their bakes, a choice is always raked over the coals by the judges? Hubris? Have they not seen the show they're on?

I remember when AFI did their TOP 100 THRILLS list and 12 Angry Men made the list somewhere between T2 and Speed. And from a certain point of view, yeah, why not? If you're thrilled you're thrilled.

Now I see some people saying, "Well, what we need is a separate Horror/Thriller category" and yeah, sure, that'll do the trick. Nobody has ever argued about those genre boundaries.

Also, lumping Comedy in with Musical makes ZERO sense and we've all been fine with that forever so what are we even doing here?

The Content Overlords decided I'm supposed to get all riled up about category placement at awards show and, nope, not biting. Grouping films by genre is an inherently slippery endeavor that will inevitably lead to edge cases and overlap. Don't care.

I came up with some more inane bullshit for everyone to argue about!
(September 23, 2026 at 10:44am)
Fake opinions to argue over…
- Never turn left on a first date.
- Every kindergarten student should have an unpaid internship.
- The periodic table is too sexual.
- Bigfoot should be allowed to vote.
- Having a dream is the same as reading a book.
- You can wear a crop top to a funeral if the deceased person was hot when they died.

Compare that monologue to this. You can see them trying desperately to lampshade this moment and make it knowing "oh darn they're ruining the ceremony with their lame stunts" because they know they're compromising for the big gooey schmaltzy moment. Stanley is dancing for chrissakes.

The American Office had a beautiful run once it found its footing but it let the audience's affection seep in and compromise its central conceit. It went from the office is a place where you're forced to tolerate people you'd normally avoid to the office is a big family full of your best friends.

Michael Cusumano @michaelcusumano.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I have noticed it's become fashionable on such lists to rank the American Office higher, a nod to its immense popularity and an understandable desire to avoid Gervais, but it's not even close.

Ricky Gervais may currently be the most insufferable person on Earth give or take Bill Maher, but the original 14 episode run of The Office remains a thing of beauty.

E.B. White established this in 1949! Move on already!
Screenshot from E.B. White's essay "Here is New York": "There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter —the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. Of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last— the city of final destination, the city that is a goal. It is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition, its poetical deportment, its dedication to the arts, and its incomparable achievements. Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but the settlers give it passion."
