Turns out we don’t have to invoke weapons of mass destruction when talking about ocean heat uptake. The ocean absorbed a record-breaking 23 zettajoules of heat last year, equivalent to 40 times the energy used by humanity. It’s not going to end well.

I no longer trust any animal video not to be AI-generated. In hindsight, before AI they were some kind of narcotic anyway, so it's good to mostly kick the habit and sparingly peek at one that looks genuine.

Fed up with people shirking responsibility by arguing that the UK causes just 1% of emissions? Here are two fantastic analogies from a primary school teacher, Mark in Coventry, who called Sheila Fogerty on @lbc.co.uk - one involving dog poo 😆 Other arguments here: www.nebriefing.org/mp-dialogue

Compare AlphaGo with Claude. AlphaGo learns from self-play; it can bootstrap. Claude is entirely dependent on the corpus of human knowledge across all its domain; it cannot bootstrap. It makes me marvel at the power of language to encapsulate and suggest meaning. LLMs are remarkable, but derivative.

Stories about people and communities doing things for climate and the environment are important not because these efforts are enough by themselves, but because they signal to likeminded people that there are others like them.

AI videos (and images) are soulless hallucinated nightmares. One cannot prompt engineer a work of art. The novelty is seductive leading to gimmicks that I hope will soon expire. The hopeful view usually needs the long bend of the sweeping arc of history, with 3D cinema a pleasing exception.

Language is a potent carrier of meaning and reasoning relative to world models. Ferocious mimicry of language suggests meaning and up to a point is coherent due to the expressive power of language. Up to that point there is use for LLMs. Nonetheless hey do not know their arse from their elbow.
