Kid just reported this convo with her teacher, about a speech she's writing: Teacher: "Think about most adults' attitude toward AI." Kid: "They hate it?" Teacher: "...Clearly, you have better adults in your life than I do." I am accepting high fives.

Using AI, a professor wrote 200 papers this year. Researchers are alarmed.
An online platform removed 257 papers written or co-written by the University of Chicago’s Nicholas Polson after other academics raised questions.

Another: car companies that want to charge a yearly or monthly fee for use of their app. Just sell me the damned car with everything I need to use it properly. I don’t want all of my interactions with big companies to take the form of ongoing subscriptions.

A pattern I’ve noticed: companies want to turn the goods they used to sell into services that you pay for on an ongoing basis. Eg, my hvac company won’t sell a furnace anymore. Instead, it wants a monthly payment to use the machine (so you’re locked into them for service and replacement). Hate this.

I do some famous essays about it (the Morrison essay, for instance) but looking for something with more history/scholarly textures

Weird how these efforts to reinvent college never seem to want input from actual instructors “…advisers include tech executives, CEOs, a onetime Vermont secretary of education, a NASA engineer and current and former administrators from Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Tufts University” etc.

My clearest memories of my student journalism career are: 1. a prof got big mad and very pushy about an article I wrote. I guess that's one way to encourage a student reporter to do better; and 2. reporting on the guy who got busted for repeatedly masturbating in the library. College papers are fun.

I would read a long-form, New Yorker style article exploring how we all became convinced that smelly, loud, inconvenient-to-fill gas mowers are necessary for the really quite small lawns in a city. Manual reel mowers always were and still are more than adequate.

I am a fan of this recurring feature of the local paper in Juneau, Alaska. Instead of just warning readers about how AI threatens news operations, this paper has decided to show them just how badly LLMs distort the news (and steal actual reporting). Seems very effective.

I try hard not to behave like a pedantic a-hole, but I have my limits. And one of those limits is the third instance of “unphased” when an author meant unfazed. Would chuck this novel in the bin, except it’s an ebook.
