Last year I was overjoyed to work on two recipes for @miaowzine.bsky.social. They raised $3,653.26 for RAPS Cat Sanctuary with additional donations made to local shelters in five different countries.

A shallow bowl filled with ice cream sandwiches with a chocolate biscuit cut in the shape of a cat and filled with with pale yellow and pale pink ice cream.

Buttermilk biscuit kolaches cut and decorated in the shape of paws, served alongside a sweet and spicy sauce.

Here's a preview of a comic I drew for @miaowzine.bsky.social Miaow is a digital charity zine with proceeds going to RAPS Cat Sanctuary, a no kill shelter that provides a home to "unadoptable" cats in British Columbia, Canada.

Image is a preview of a comic drawn for Miaow: A Cat Zine. The comic excerpt has 4 panels-
Panel one: A bald shelter volunteer sweats with worry, staring at a cat carrier in front of them. The inside of the carrier is pitch black save for a pair of angry eyes and sharp teeth. Hissing is coming from the carrier. Text reads: My partner Fallon adopted Maxwell in 2015. When the shelter found him they initially thought he was ferals.

Panel two: Text continues: But after a few days he began warming up to people. The panel shows Maxwell, a light colored cat with tabby stripes rubs and purrs against the leg of the shelter volunteer. Maxwell looks up with a sweet expression on his face and a halo drawn above him. The volunteer smiles as they write in their notes, "suprisingly friendly for a feral cat."

Panel three: Text reads: At the shelter pick him up and hold him... Panel shows Fallon holding Maxwell inside the shelter with enclosures behind them. Fallon has light colored, short hair and glasses. They awe at Maxwell's cuddliness.

Panel four: Text continues: But once they brought him home they really hated it. Panel shows Fallon holding Maxwell lower to the ground and says, "Wow, you really wanted to get out of there." Maxwell is bug eyed and angrily meowing.

Image is a photo of Maxwell curled up on a fuzzy pokemon blanket. Max is a beige colored cat with brown striped markings on his face, paws, and tail. He is curled into a crescent shape, his arms stretched out, and he is napping peacefully

I’m excited to share a charmingly cozy and delightfully fluffy murder mystery story with @miaowzine.bsky.social, a digital zine celebrating all things feline. Proceeds will be donated to RAPS Cat Sanctuary, and preorders are open until September 5 here: miaow.bigcartel.com

A promo graphic for “Angus and Peaches Get Away with Murder,” a story I contributed to Miaow: A Cat Zine. The story summary reads: The beautiful and elegant Evelyn Zhang recently became a widow, and her newly acquired wealth has raised suspicions. When the police fail to find any evidence of foul play, Evelyn’s mother-in-law hires a pair of private detectives. Despite a clear motive, Evelyn committed no murder. Her two black cats are not so innocent, however, and they will do whatever it takes to protect their beloved human.

Fiction Sample:

I remember being small, sitting on Mother’s knee while she told me, in hushed undertones, stories of the outside world. I never knew such a place could exist.

Mother was always tired. She always had this faraway look in her eyes. She was quiet when they argued, and quiet when he hit her. She was especially quiet when she taught me how to read, showing me how to fold the books with illustrations into the pages of thicker tomes.

We didn’t speak of the outside world anywhere the wind could hear us.

I could see how he treated her, and how she feared him. I could see how he would bruise her, and how she would let it happen. I knew it made me unhappy, but I never understood why. Not until the first time it happened to me. Once I learned what ‘pain’ and ‘fear’ were, I began to see them everywhere. Inside our home and beyond it —the world was filled with suffering, and at the heart of all of it: my father.

I won’t say I ever loved him before then, but I never hated him either. I never fully knew what those things were; emotion wasn’t part of my childhood curriculum.

Now I had learned what it meant when he hit her, and I could not tolerate it any longer.

Fiction SampleThe house is hollow, and I’m the thing rattling around inside it. This place is too big
for the people left behind, but too small for me. I can’t move without brushing against
memories.

My sister is still crying in her room. Every instinct I have screams to stay, to do
something, but what’s the point? I’ve already hurt her more than I ever did in life.
Mom and Dad were right—ghosts are no comfort.

I leave her there and drift into the kitchen. It’s empty, dark but for the faint green
glow from the stove clock. The hum of the refrigerator fills the space, steady and
indifferent, the sound of life continuing without me, underscored by the air
conditioner kicking on.

This house was a living thing once, but now it feels almost as dead as I am.

I know that it’s selfish to stay, but I don’t want to leave.

The hum of the refrigerator. The creak of brick and beam. Their mercurial grief
flooding the house with quicksilver.

I don’t want to leave.

Poetry Sample

springtime doesn’t know the world is ending
addiction, poverty, homelessness epidemic
we forgot to tell the birds not to sing
a moment of silence for the people dying in the streets
riots, police brutality, prison industrial complex
we forgot to tell the flowers to hold their peace
not to bloom in the face of our collective grief
we are the weeds breaking through the asphalt
with our faces towards the sun
