I ran an intermediate excel workshop yesterday on using power query and pivot tables to do basic statistical analysis and data viz. Although I initially thought this would be a useful tool for anyone who doesn't want to code, I ultimately find the Excel workflow to be too circuitous.

We're not done with topic modeling today! A convo with @dmimno.bsky.social & @walshbr.bsky.social last week about topic modeling tools for worksohps got me revisiting Scott Enderle's Topic Modeling Tool (sadly now broken, at least for me), jsLDA & what I look for in a tool to teach with.

Introducing my new professional portfolio, hosted on Github: m-hosek.github.io/portfolio/in... I used claudecode to generate the initial html, css, and js. I then used the integrated copilot tool to troubleshoot any issues I ran into during the revision phase.

My current approach to integrating AI into higher education begins with faculty research. We not only garner excellent UX feedback on our AI tools based in faculty's expertise, but also focus our attention to where AI can assist, not replace, academic excellence.

Can anyone recommend #DH work on the authorship of "Dream of the Red Chamber“? 有没有人在用DH来研究《红楼梦》的作家?本学校有一位英文教授,他想用类似的方法来学习莎士比亚的作品。我要帮他搜索资料。 谢谢!

Hello community! I'm looking for some advice on how to advocate for myself as an alt-ac scholar. Sadly, I have had a third adjunction opportunity fall through at my institution...I'm having trouble breaking into new departments and programs. Teaching is my passion, I want my courses to run!

My final project from @lucidbard.bsky.social and @anasalter.bsky.social 's AI for DH Pedagogy Class at #DHSI2026 finally works! It is a locally-run AI writing assistant, which grades my writing according to a customized rubric and offers starting points for revision. Grateful for this class!

Overheard at DHSI re: claude's release of FABLE "I can confidently say that this model will be better than any undergraduates I teach." This wasn't celebratory....it's foreboding. It's sobering. Freaking existential.

We often attribute student reading struggles to tiktok/instagram reel-style media consumption, but I'm beginning to think it its more than just an "attention span" problem. When I binge scroll, I my eyes feel tired, I don't sleep as well, and I feel unmoored. What is it doing to my brain?

I've been recommending ArcOnline's "Survey123" to a number of faculty at my institution. It makes data entry easy, permits image uploads, and can geocode information instantly. Plus, with one survey, multiple students (in a class, or across multiple internships) can contribute to data-collection. 👍

Newest article by Theo Baker. Not only does he capture the zeitgeist of Stanford's fast lane, but he identifies a trend that is spreading outwards to other schools: the datafication, monetization, and devaluation of the undergraduate student experience. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/17/o...

I noticed a few discrepancies between the original language and translation of Trump's toast at the summit banquet today. Possibly, it was just a case of things getting "lost in translation." But what are the chances that, as a diplomatic strategy, government officials want a "lossy" translation?

It seems like data-mining students is going to be the new thing in higher ed.... Proponents point towards better ability to predict retention and discover failing students. But is student wellbeing/failing really an issue that can be fixed with data? I don't think so. What's the real goal?

Loved this talk by Prof Tang! He argued that the criticisms of vibe coding (security loopholes, not timesaving, troubleshooting, etc) are relevant for industry coders, but not for DH'ers. When you only need to do specific tasks on a local machine, vibe coding is an accessible and effective option.

What am I getting wrong with ArcOnline geocoding? This is supposed to be a map of NYS lottery winners. The dataset include the location of retailers that sold winning tickets. OBVIOUSLY, there shouldn't be any outside of New York. And yet....
