Always sad to leave MBL after our cycle at NS&B is over! We had an awesome time doing mini2p imaging with a @thorlabs.bsky.social system to look at cortical neurons in freely moving animals. Can't even see the scope in the lab pic, tiny but powerful! 💪🔬🐭 @nsb-mbl.bsky.social @mhigley.bsky.social

Many pro astrophysicists receive unsolicited letters from amateurs with new but subtly wrong physics theories, often about relativity and from retired engineers. This cute new paper is a perfect reply & I love how it uses cyclotrons & transponders & radar 🧪🔭 arxiv.org/abs/2605.21660

following a couple other comments, i guess i would agree/argue that encoding by dynamics on a manifold is not a fundamentally distinct idea - and one i agree with wholeheartedly.

Michael Higley @mhigley.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
honestly, i read their abstract and to me their description of an alternative model just sounds like "encoding", the way most of us mean it- not the simple straw man they set up.

Often a brake, sometimes a gas pedal. The neurotransmitter GABA typically inhibits brain activity. But in a new study published in #Neuron, researchers in the @mhigley.bsky.social lab show that GABA may, in certain circumstances, enhance neuronal activity.

The Brain’s Braking System Can Sometimes Become a Gas Pedal, Study Finds
A neurotransmitter known to quiet activity in the brain can sometimes do the opposite, researchers find, offering implications for psychiatric treatment.

Until the pioneering but recent work from Zaborsky (ACh) and Luo (NE), i think the widespread assumption was that modulatory axons sent widespread branches across the cortex. The new imaging studies demonstrate the spatiotemporal heterogeneity consistent with localized projection patterns.

Do brain circuits really sit in a 'soup' of neuromodulators? Are neurons like soggy bits of bread soaked in signaling factors? Is the whole brain just squelching around in one big pool of warm modulators?

yeah, we thought about this a bit- i don't want to speculate too broadly but definitely a possibility. also, earlier work from etienne sibille's and beni luscher's labs on SST cells and depression/anxiety are very interesting.

SST interneurons facilitate dendritic calcium signaling via tonic activation of α5-GABA receptors
Chiu et al. found that activation of SST-expressing interneurons induces tonic currents through dendritic α5-containing GABA receptors in pyramidal neurons of the neocortex. Tonic GABAergic hyperpolarization deinactivates dendritic voltage-gated calcium channels, enhancing calcium influx during action potentials. Increased dendritic calcium signaling facilitates calcium- and endocannabinoid-dependent inhibitory synaptic plasticity.

New work from Chiayu Chiu, Tom Morse, and colleagues. We find that activation of alpha5 GABA-A receptors produces tonic hyperpolarization of pyramidal dendrites, leading to deinactivation of low-threshold calcium channels.

Overall, visually-evoked ACh release in V1 reconfigures local GABAergic circuits to boost sensory responses and support conditioned behavior. Rather than being a simple gate for learning, cholinergic plasticity is actually the mechanism for expression of conditioned behavior! 5/5
