when I was in Heavensward patches I wrote the first Marseille appearance and there’s a bit in there where Mharwyb nearly forgets that G’raha exists which could not be funnier given things to come

Mharwyb explains, "My mother studied at the Arcanist Guild in her travels." Briefly. Always briefly.
"I would be lying if I said I came with anything resembling a plan, but Limsa Lominsa seemed a good place to start down the path of a graduate.

He nods at this, upbeat. "And you've wasted no time in befriending the local Archon, I see."
"A few," Mharwyb admits.
"A few?" He leans closer to her, and she leans back. "Not just the one? How many could possibly even be in Eorzea?" He is thrilled for her. He is excited, a boyish thrill thrumming at the tips of him at the idea of her bumping elbows with the most elite of elite researchers, the most distinguished of distinguished scholars. There was no greater honor than to be marked, in Sharlayan. There was no deeper source of pride than to have one's work hailed as a foundational step in a staircase of academia pursued ever higher.
She does a quick count in her head. "Five," she says, confidently. Then, she remembers Master Matoya, but isn't sure if she's supposed to be mentioning she knows Master Matoya. "Six?" Fuck.
G'raha. "Seven."

favorite bit from my goosebumps fic in this btw #OURGASLEAK

Using the family computer was my favorite thing to do in the whole world other than maybe reading with Grandpa or solving a big equation in math.
Even though Alphinaud was better than me at reading and at math, I was the best in the house at the computer. My mom sometimes asked me to come downstairs and help her reset a password, which she always forgot. One time I even helped Dad set up an e-mail account.
Ryne was fascinated with the computer. She didn't have one at her house. Thancred didn't like them, but he didn't like a lot of things, so no one really took his opinion seriously. I pulled up a website of games for girls. Sometimes I played games for boys, but Ryne liked the girls ones, so I chose the website with the largest selection of dress-up games and let her sit down and pick first. She looked very small in my father's office chair. She was shorter than me, which was only notable because I was really short.
She selected a princess dress-up game. She loved the princess ones. I thought they were kind of samey—| mean, they were always just big dresses in pink, purple, or blue-but I watched her choose a frilly pink ballgown and red hair. That was another thing about Ryne: she always made the girl she was dressing up have red hair, and always chose the pink clothes options. It was a little girly for my tastes, but she was always so in love with her final outfit I never teased her about it. Even though she squished her face when made one of my characters the same blonde as her hair. She was so picky.

"Do you want to print her out?" I offered
Ryne shook her head. "That would be so much ink."
"My dad's not here,
" I said.
I printed out the red haired girl with her pink dress and handed the paper to Ryne. She held it in her hands with a light grip, like she was scared to crinkle it.
"Thank you," she said.
"No problem," I replied, happy she was happy. She was my best friend in the whole world and also my only friend. I would do anything for her. I would even get scolded for printing a full-color image of a princess.
She carefully slipped it into a clear plastic school folder in her backpack.

huichaana is just sort of nice and motherly but this is my favorite scene she’s in. woman who won. fraewyda didn’t know she was competing but huichaana won.

Thancred waits a beat. When she does not continue, he says, "Indeed. Sharlayan. My friend here is looking to discuss a personal matter with Copiycha. When might he be in?"
The woman ignores him. She appraises Mharwyb.
She leans herself against the doorway. She crosses her arms.
"You're one of those Roe-dins, right?" the woman says. "No. You're the Roe-din."
"Roegadyn,
"Thancred offers.
The woman ignores him again. She has an unmoving stare only for Mharwyb. She says,
"You're less pink than I thought you'd be."
Mharwyb shrinks back. "You know of me?" She tries to parse this. He knew, then? He knew and never called upon her? "He's spoken of me?"
"As one describes a particularly destructive dust-storm, doomed to one day return," the woman says, with a mild smile. "But you're many years too late for him, I fear."

Mharwyb's blood goes cold. Thancred would have told her if any of the direction-offerers had noted she was looking for a man gone. Surely someone would have mentioned it, right? Surely they would have said she hunts a dead man?
"He's... passed?" she asks, with a shaking voice.
The woman snorts. "No," she says, "he's married."
She holds up her right hand. There, on her wrist, is an intricately carved wooden bangle that shines with lacquer. Mharwyb does not know the customs of this place but she knows the stake of a wife.
Mharwyb realizes the misunderstanding a few seconds after Thancred.
"Oh, no," Thancred says, "this isn't Fraewyda. She is not your husband's notably pinker and very former Roegadyn, I mean. This is Fraewyda's daughter."
Mharwyb is Fraewyda's daughter, but she was not forged in isolation. She finds her resolve.
She says, before she can think better of it:
"I am Copiycha's daughter."

"Bahamut, lord of dragons," Thancred says.
Moenlorh makes a grabby motion with her hands at it. Huichaana looks horrified. Her eyes are wide.
Huichaana says, distant, "The Third Promise's..."
"Feast your eyes upon the Warrior of Light, savior of this star and several others," Thancred says. He sounds a little tired. "Unstoppable and insatiable.
Adored where'er she goes. And go she will."
Copiycha, to his credit, puts up an undeterred fight.
It would be easy to give in at the sight of a summoned dragon and yet he does not. He is fifty-something and duels with dulled blades but he dodges what he can and clenches teeth through that which he cannot.
A particularly brutal surge of enemy punctures him and knocks him on his ass. Huichaana's shields shatter. "Oof," he says, which might be the most remarkable reaction Mharwyb has ever had to the wrath of Bahamut's shade. She has not taken a step since the start of the battle. She did not let him get close. She stands perfectly neutral before her father, eyes tinged with a blue glow and fingertips humming with an otherworld primal's reflection.
Copiycha looks at Mharwyb, and then up to her summon, and smiles his familiar, ever-present smile. He tips from his sit in a noble surrender. His back hits the sandy ground beneath him.
"Beautiful," he says, which is a remarkable reaction as well. He gazes up at the sky with a pleased, unfocused expression. He says, under his breath, skyward and true, "Despite it all, look at what we've done."

Something untethers inside Mharwyb and her balance wobbles. She shuts her book. Bahamut poofs back into a small carbuncle. The creature does one more lap, and then dissipates into a wisp of atheric sparkles.
Mharwyb wheezes in a breath, winded but otherwise unbothered. She stretches the arm she uses to hold her tome. She blinks, and collects herself, and then bolts forward to Copiycha.
She tips herself over him. "Father. Are you alright?"
It slips out seamlessly. She did not mean to say it.
She wishes to shove it back down her throat the second it falls past her teeth. She bends over Copiycha and drops it on him like a rock. She has never even called Fraewyda the title of Mother. She has never called the family she has never had anything at all.
Her father must sense her terror, or at least see the white of her eyes, because he says. "Easy," and,
"I'm just fine. You may call me what you please, Dawntrail. I'm happy to be it to you."
She gazes down upon the man who is her father where he lies dusty in the dirt.
She starts to cry.
