So let me say it as clearly as I can: Without basic scientific research, supported by the kind of farsighted public investment that allows large-scale, undirected, curiosity-driven inquiry, the scientific pipeline will run dry.
In daily life, people may not feel the effects right away, or even in 10 years. But we will feel it. And when someone we love needs therapies that could have emerged but didn't or when other countries now
investing in science can launch new science-based industries or run their societies on vast resources of fusion energy or reap the benefits of quantum computing power or advanced medical breakthroughs, America will wish it sustained its leadership in scientific research here and now.

I’m not saying AI is all bad - of course it holds promise. Ezra’s idea that it could be useful for helping more people get access to needed medical treatment is a good one. But my guy - in an era in which vulnerable CHILDREN are having their medical records subpoenaed by the DOJ, is this good?

Study after study shows that AI data centers are raising rates of asthma, making the water undrinkable, increasing ER visits, and making it harder to sleep due to ambient noise. We are creating more environmental sacrifice zones around the country so people can ask an LLM to write emails.

The real concern is not even about the utility cost, but about the very real environmental harms to already marginalized communities. The data center wasn’t going to go in our wealthiest neighborhood, but in one of our poorest, a place that already has disproportionately poor health outcomes.

Truly begging apparel & footwear retailers to stop including a “free” tote with every purchase. It’s not free—it’s just another textile people have to deal with. MAYBE 2% of people are using them—the rest end up in donation or recycling centers, or worse, landfills. There are better options.
