In the end, I wanted to take some of the guesswork out of this for funders. Ethical local news is important, and it should be seen as critical community infrastructure, just like clean water and nutritious food.

It also has cool, replicable case studies and a number of one-page resources that funders can use to help make the case inside their organizations. And it has a workbook that helps funders craft the outlines of a strategy and gives them a real place to start making a difference right away.

I’m really proud of the finished product. It’s actionable and accessible. It grounds funders in important fundamentals, such as how to navigate editorial independence. It has a variety of funder and partner voices sharing their experiences. It has engaging interactive exercises to help people learn.

I already wanted to see it but now I want to see it more. Btw if you haven’t heard @harvilla.bsky.social’s episode of 60 Songs that Explain the 90s about A Long December, I recommend it highly (it’s pretty devastating, tho)

I'll let you know when I've finished it. I LOVED The Employees, Ravn's last book. Butter was OK but I didn't love it as much as I wanted to.

I grew up banging on this thing as a kid, even though it was tonally a mismatch with the classical stuff I learned to play. Now it’s back in my possession, I’m looking forward to treating it more kindly and learning some music that suits its warm and funky sound. Any suggestions of where to start?

A+ thrift store find. Can’t wait to read.
An inside book page displays the title:

“Famous Hussies of History by Albert Payton Terhune”The forward reads:

“Find the Woman.
You will discover her in almost every generation, in almost every country, in almost every big city—the Super-Woman. She is not the typical adventuress; she is not a genius. The reason for her strange power is occult. When psycho-vivisectionists have thought they had segregated the cause-the formula-what you will—in one particular Super-Woman or group of Super-Women, straightway some new member of the clan has arisen who wields equal power with her notable sisters, but who has none of the traits that made them irresistible. And the seekers of formulas are again at sea.
What makes the Super-Woman?
Is it beauty?
Cleopatra and Rachel were homely. Is it daintiness?
Marguerite de Valois washed her hands but twice a week. Is it wit? Pompadour and La Valliere were avowedly stupid in conversation. Is it youth? Diane de Poictiers and Ninon de l'Enclos were wildly adored at sixty. Is it the subtle quality of femininity? George Sand, who numbered her admirers by the score-poor Chopin in their foremost rank—was not only ugly, but disgustingly mannish. So was Semiramis.”The forward continues:

“The nameless charm is found almost as often in the masculine, "advanced" woman as in the ultrafeminine damsel.
Here are stories of Super-Women who conquered at will. Some of them smashed thrones; some were content with wholesale heart-smashing. Wherein lay their secret? Or, rather, their secrets? For seldom did two of them follow the same plan of campaign.
ALBERT PAYSON TERHUNE
"Sunnybank,"
Pompton Lakes,
New Jersey”The table of contents reads:

“CHAPTER ONE LOLA MONTEZ

CHAPTER TWO NINON DE L'ENCLOS

CHAPTER THREE PEG WOFFINGTON

CHAPTER FOUR HELEN OF TROY

CHAPTER FIVE MADAME JUMEL

CHAPTER SIX ADRIENNE LECOUVREUR

CHAPTER SEVEN CLEOPATRA

CHAPTER EIGHT GEORGE SAND

CHAPTER NINE MADAME DU BARRY

CHAPTER TEN LADY BLESSINGTON

CHAPTER ELEVEN MADAME RECAMIER

CHAPTER TWELVE LADY HAMILTON”

➡️ How can you approach looking for a job while you still have one? ➡️ How do you deal with the emotions of leaving? ➡️ Should you go it alone and start your own newsletter, podcast, service or product? and, the big one: ➡️ Should you leave journalism?

Thank you to the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for remembering my father at this year's Canadian Screen Awards. He loved his work in his adopted country of Canada, and it means a lot to my sister and me to have him remembered this way.

I do writing competitions for fun. In my last one, I had to write a ghost story. Six days into the eight-day assignment, my dad died. I managed to finish the piece anyway and submit. So it’s satisfying to find out my story made the top five, and I’m going through to the next round.

What does it look like when funders "move at the speed of news"? It looks like this. TL;DR: funders can (and should) plan ahead for crises, from major news stories to natural disasters, so they're ready to respond when something happens. This is a good blueprint. www.poynter.org/business-wor...
