I do writing competitions for fun. In my last one, I had to write a ghost story. Six days into the eight-day assignment, my dad died. I managed to finish the piece anyway and submit. So it’s satisfying to find out my story made the top five, and I’m going through to the next round.

I was THAT GUY recently and caught a mistake on the write up of a museum exhibit and “uh, actually”-ed the docent. (Anyone know knows anything about Ikkyu Sojun knows he would never “enlighten” a sex worker about “the evils of her profession.”) Once a fact checker, always a fact checker.

A 19th century woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige called “48 Seki: The Priest Ikkyu and the Courtesan Jigoku-dayu, from The Fifty-three Pairs (or Parallels) for the Tokaido Road 1845-1846” depicting an old man with a woman, both in kimono. His kimono is simple; hers has an elaborate scene on the back. Behind her, a small girl hides.
