"Association does not imply causation" is the truth and continues to be an important mantra in the practice of statistics. What does it actually mean? Can we prove causal relationships using observational data? If no, does it mean that detected associations are useless? #statssky #causalinference

This was in the 60's. Now kids have TI calculators & apps like Desmos as part of math class. A similar thing is happening now with #ai, but this time on writing instead of computing. As before, #education must adapt to prepare students for their future, which includes ai tools. #edusky #iteachmath

Remember that in #statistics, there’s a world of difference between setting out to find if two things are different and not finding enough evidence that they are, and setting out to find if two things are the same and finding enough evidence that they are. Never mistake the former for the latter.

Think of how much sleep you typically get. Decide to stop looking at screens an hour before bed. Collect data on your sleep in this new setting. One of the things I live by as a teacher: don't test what you didn't teach. Obviously, this doesn't mean that our examples should be the exact items we include in our exams, but we should be mindful about how much the complexity of our test items depart from our examples. #edusky #iteachmath #STEM

Handwashing wasn't #commonsense until the 1840's, when Ignaz Semmelweis showed it drastically reduced puerperal fever incidence among new mothers. Even then, it faced resistance, and took decades of more #science from Pasteur and Lister to be accepted by the public. Do you wash your hands? #edusky
