John Carney’s “Once” (2007) was a huge inspiration for The Book of Life (2014). A guitarista with his heart on his sleeve sets out on an impossible journey of faith. Manolo’s beaten guitar and hole was our little homage to Hansard’s beautifully beaten guitar. Gracias forever, Maestro Glen Hansard.

Molly has a daring, heroic expression while wearing María's red, white, and yellow dress with embroidered flower patterns and brandishes two swords; her big blue hair is fashioned in a ponytail, and her skin is light brown. (She's not bronzing her skin or anything, she's just a brown Mexican here.) Momo is painted pink, wears pig ears, has a collar around his neck, and is happily walking on all fours next to Molly. She and Momo are much smaller in the frame compared to Nora, who fills most of the frame behind them.

Nora, giving a gentle smile and with one hand on her hip, is wearing La Muerte's red dress and big sombrero with candles and skull ornaments (the yellow skulls are replaced with peaches). Her skin is painted white with Day of the Dead-style decoration, and her eyes glow yellow. Some elements I made purple to fit with Nora's purple color scheme, specifically her long hair, irises, upper eye lids, and a few skull ornaments. She has Mexican marigold flowers in her hair, on her dress, and around her wrists.
