Poops from the recent Shetland Egyptian Nightjar yielded DNA. Not much genetic difference between nominate (eastern) and saharae (western) subspecies, but Shetland bird is likely nominate; DNA is like birds from Oman and Kuwait. #birds #birding #birdingscotland @birdguides.bsky.social

Seemingly limited justification for reinforcement for the 'Critically low' (actually Green Listed) Long-eared Owl population: 'decreasing winter roost counts' (= Continental migrants short-stopping?) & UK breeding population apparently stable & limited by food & Tawny Owls #UKBirding #Ornithology
Text from 2023 RBBP report: Long-eared Owl Asio otus Green
Less scarce 1,800+ bp* (no trend available) Low
250–341 pairs. Numbers of Long-eared Owls reported to the RBBP fluctuate considerably between years, at least in part reflecting the availability of the Short-tailed Voles Microtus agrestis which form an important component of their diet. As we have shown previously (Eaton et al. 2023b), these fluctuations are in synchrony with those of Short-eared Owls Asio flammeus, and this stayed true in 2023 with both species being reported in above-average numbers: 341 pairs is the fourth-highest total we have reported for Long-eared Owl in the 14 years since adding the species to our list. It remains, however, a fraction of the likely population of this elusive owl. Finding Long-eared Owls can be difficult, particularly in the early spring when birds are establishing territories, but offers the fieldworker great satisfaction when successful; we would like to encourage more observers to take on the challenge!
