"Marx says that value is labor, but I think the real value is the land and water we're polluting" - guy with a tenuous relationship to reality and to the function of words

Every now and then I make the mistake of hoping that a nominal philosopher engages with philosophy and so follow them, and then my feed is just stuff like this until I unfollow them

"I'm having a bit of trouble with a friend" "They're the devil" "Yeah? I don't know, it might just be a miscommunication, or mismatched expectations" "They are literally Hitler" "Oh my goodness, I had no idea" "You deserve better than that, queen" "Thanks for helping me through this" "Of course!"

I don't care how gung-ho you are for violent revolution, if your vision of the essence of communism is "to each according to their need, from each according to their ability", then you are a radical social democrat who recognizes the necessity of violence for change, not a communist.

Of course it's harmful to tell people to "smile more". But we should also ask why people don't smile here.

Idiocy is nothing other than an unsurmounted and indefinite childhood, and as a childhood it can be outgrown, regardless of age. In the vast, vast majority of cases, there is nothing biological or terminal to idiocy. It is a poverty, a social evil, that can be remedied individually and en masse.

Marx was unable to appreciate the importance and power of imagination because he lived in a time where there had not yet been a generation of people whose social being was overwhelmingly verbal-symbolic rather than social object-oriented.

I get wigged out by people who interrupt your conversation to tell you about something completely unrelated that the discussion made them think about due to loose aesthetic sensory/verbal similarity like man you're 30 how do you not know how to subordinate your imagination?

The differentiation of automation and intentional labor is exciting actually. More and more we can automate work and get far more done, and that leaves the work we choose to do for the purpose of our own joy and growth far more pure. The camera does not prevent people from painting.

A human (a personality) is defined by intential internal autostimulation. You can tell you're working with a human, rather than an animal, if they regularly pause and ponder, and do so consciously. If in conversation they knit their brow, and especially if they name it as such.

Our mode of production does not necessitate friendship. As a result, the vast majority of people here, now, have zero friends. Although they may have a lot of people they like and who like them and with whom they spend pleasant time together.

People talk about kintsugi, and how much stronger and more wonderful a thing can be once shattered and lovingly repaired. I do not know if you appreciate what it means to shatter a life or a relationship into little pieces, nor what it means to pick them up by their jagged edges and love them whole

One time I met a horizontalist, antiauthoritarian activist who was the leader of a horizontal community org who told me that "consensus is where people take on as much as they can live with from what we decide to do", where "we" meant "I", and her horizontalist underlings enthusiastically agreed.

The transgression of a value is often the creation of that value in a person, if handled appropriately.

We do not have environments where people are safe to fail, and we must create those if we're ever going to grow up. Many people agree to this sentence, but they have in mind only the "failures" that are clean, small, and only self-effecting. Failure is a violation of one's own interests and values.

You cannot productively study philosophy without having meaningfully engaged with its object, without having social-productive object-oriented activity with its object, without laboring with its object. You can't know what the object of philosophy is until you've productively studied it.

The defining feature of a humanity is the ability to modify itself through modifying its environment. The defining feature of a human is to modify itself through autostimulation, through modifying its environment, including the imaginings it's experiencing. We call this autostimulation "personality"

Citizens are granted formal, legal autonomy, but do not enjoy actual, material autonomy. This is obvious in the realm of material needs; people have the "freedom" to work or die. It is not at all obvious in the realm of choice, wherein the majority are "free" to unconsciously react to stimuli.

The popularity of fiction centred around video games -- real people trapped in video game worlds, or worlds which are not video games but which operate under video game logic (quests, levels, etc.) -- is a consequence of the fact that many people's most significant life activity is video games.

Animals are immediately one with their life activity, while the distinguishing feature of human consciousness is mediation. The highest, most developed form of mediated life is in the word. What few seemed to notice, however, is that the life activity some are immediately one with IS words!

It is often the case that growthful situations -- growth such that a person who goes through it comes to say "I'm glad that happened to me, I would not change it, I would fight to ensure it happened to me, and I believe it should happen to others" -- are avoided and unwanted by those not yet grown.

We reject the idea that people are unequal. We do this for two reasons, which are one reason: (1) historically, there has been a lot of harm done by those who spoke of inequality or who are described as its advocates, and (2) the image of inequality makes people uncomfortable and upset.

Notice when you take issue with what someone says and you correct them, and they reply "that's what I meant". Sometimes it's just ego. Other times they really did misspeak. But sometimes -- and this is the interesting one -- you'll have encountered an undifferentiated thought/understanding.

The thought that one could know a true idea (and you must understand that all ideas are true or you won't understand this) without believing it results from one's undifferentiation of thoughts and ideas, confusing the image-laden neural activity of an ape (or the words in a book) with an idea.

Many of our societal problems involve the general failure of our society to develop in people the higher cognitive functions as described by Lev Vygotsky. The lack of spontaneous workers' movements and the total absence of the Vanguard Party chief among them.

"Ethics" is a game where one poses herself zany situations & questions in order to observe her emotional responses. Then, repeating this many times, she tries fetishistically to find her emotional response in the situations, rather than in her own mind. If her gut agrees with others', she publishes!

It's hard to overstate how cognitively and emotionally crippled those most drawn to communism in the imperial core tend to be. Attempting to organize these people, within or without the Party or pre-party project, can only end in disaster.

It's a common misconception that if a person likes the image of something, dislikes the present state of things, would benefit from a thing, complains about the present state of things, earnestly believes she wants a thing, or claims she wants a thing, then that means she wants the thing.

Gramsci is remembered as proof that misery produces geniuses. But it does not. He wrote despite the cell, his failing body, the silence of the world — NOT because of them. What we have are fragments of what he could have been, not the whole.

Simulation is the metabolization of the material world into ideal form through labor and its subsequent reproduction in verbal form. Simulacra is when a person engages with simulation not as a mediator for the material world but in lieu of it, and then produces their own verbal artifacts.

"Sorry, I shouldn't presume..." What are you talking about? Human activity, including communication & connection, consists in actively trying to predict the object of your attention. If you're not actively trying to predict what I'm thinking and going to say next, you're not communicating with me.

There is revolution and there is rebellion. Revolution is progressive, it is the sublation of that which is revolutionized. Rebellion is regressive, reactionary, it is the rejection of that which is rebelled against. Rebellion may be a positive moment within revolution, but only if sublated.

"Do you actually respect your partner?" is a genuine question, and not an attack, not a form of passive aggression, but may appear to you as such if you don't. It's a question you should be asking yourself and each other not infrequently. Do you actually respect your partner?

You don't need to say "that gives me dopamine". You can just say "that makes me happy". You're allowed to be happy, and seek happiness. You don't have to pretend like your body is a haunted robot you're taking care of. And it's less correct anyway. Mario doesn't "get bits" when he collects coins.
