Session 18 of our Saltmarsh campaign. Player schedule (numbers reduced as a result) aside, the campaign is solid. If we can solve the scheduling issues, then perfect. Otherwise, we may have to recalibrate things after this module has been completed.

You don’t need fancy minis and terrain to play #DnD - in a group or solo. Coloured D6s are mercs (6 hp each), D3 & grey D6 are the PCs. The gold & red bits are giant rats. The D12 is the fire. Took seconds to set up. Use what you have + imagination. #DungeonsAndDragons #TTRPG

My solo character died, so I’m taking a break from Sword World to do some mini painting. Finishing off (bases) of some I started a couple of years back (intervention of English Civil War army etc.). There’s a load more that have yet to be painted. Except for that gargoyle, they just a need varnish.

As you can see, I’ve been on a bit of a binge this month. My latest purchases are the solo innkeeper game The Broken Cask, Nobinobi TRPG: Magic (a card-based narrative RPG), and Ryugaikenjintan. The last is a Japanese-style fantasy supplement for Sword World 2.5 RPG.

1/After finishing the second Sword World starter set (the first is set in a dungeon, the second in a city), I’m about to begin the Adventurers Guild set: an intermediate level adventure that interestingly builds on the other box sets. None of these require the full rules and can be ran by novices.

Finished scenario 2 of the SW2.5 starter set (well one of the many…) A nice mystery and step up from scenario 1. Actually makes me want to run an urban adventure. And this came: I backed it on Kickstarter 2 years back (so my name’s in it), but didn’t have a physical copy until now.

Sword World starter set solo play through session 2. Running all 4 pregens. Completed the first proper scenario. Simple & fairly linear, but a good tutorial, unusual in that it’s a city/mystery adventure.

We enjoyed a fun game of Warhammer The Old World RPG session 2 yesterday. No dice were rolled, but we climbed into the skin our characters. Meanwhile I’ve adopted Rolemaster classic for a solo game I’ve been playing - using Mythic, but temporarily Old-School Solo, plus various tables. Fun!

I know I said we’d finished U1 a while back, but everything moves in slow motion in old-man RPG time. We’re about to begin the action of U2: Danger at Dunwater! The party are now levels 2-4. The fighters (and everyone else bar the cleric) have amusingly low hit points - the joyous old school!

I woke up and wrote on Advanced D&D actually being quite basic. While I could never say it’s my favourite gaming system, for whatever reason, it’s the one that consistently gets us around the gaming table. Our youngest player started in 2019 when he was 22, so it can’t be just nostalgia either🤔

In our Saltmarsh game last night, I suggested dropping (weapon) proficiencies entirely. I was happy when one of the vet players (since late 70s) agreed, saying “everything in AD&D is optional anyway.” So different from some of rules-as-written purists. Rock n roll baby!

Picked up a full RPG and a solo engine for less than half the price of a 1/3 part of WotC’s interpretation of Arneson & Gygax’s game. Cairn looks awesome so far!

Saltmarsh (the original U series) is back on, and we basically finished the first chapter. People are enjoying it, we’re playing AD&D properly (tailoring it to the game), and there might be some recruits. This is a bit premature, but I’m thinking of combining the UK mods in addition to the U series.

In addition to this, I bought Solitary Defilement for Mork Borg, which is a game I like but am not sure will see much group play again. Really, I think a lot of my solo play is going to arise from the desire to play games and adventures that I’m unlikely to have the group or time for otherwise.
