As Josef Stalin might have said today: “Oho, the Pope! Tell me, how many local nodes does /he/ run?”
Post by Pope Leo XIV on X:
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce.
There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack…

Reply from Spectromachina: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand?
You're not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?

The Lords of Midnight (1984). Turn-based strategy with multiple armies, a pseudo-3D view, 4,000 locations. Took 48 kilobytes of RAM and a 256 by 192 pixel display with (barely) 16 colours. Still remarkably playable today.

We used to get such good blurbs. This is from one of the Redfox collections. (We asked Anne McCaffrey to provide a blurb on the lines of “I absolutely hated it”, but she politely declined. She got the joke, though.)

Started a long overdue audit of the filing cabinet. Found something from a while back that I knew wasn't lost, just had no idea where it had gone. Anyway, here it is.
Sample poster for the Valkyrie Press comic Redfox. The eponymous protagonist is the shorter, lighter haired one on the left, sporting a basque, a studded belt, pants held up by a thong studded with fangs, and knee high boots. To her right, Lyssa the Axe slayer of men, vanquisher of cities, and expert curry maker. Lyssa is dark haired and wearing a bandanna, a waistcoat over a short-sleeved shirt, a pair of thick trousers held up by a sturdy belt, and cavalry boots folded down at the knee.

Charging the car while the sun shines. Not much, but it’s free at the point of delivery* and it all adds up. *Solar panels and car chargers are a one-off cost for the long term. As to how much they pay off, who knows? But the car’s not running on dead dinosaur juice either way.

August 11, 1999. I’d dreamed of travelling to Cornwall to see the total eclipse there since I was a child. In the end, I didn’t go, though not for want of trying. The eclipse in Leeds wasn’t total, but at least it was visible.

I’ve just seen this as an end note to a story on AO3. Well played.
Notes:

Licenses for using this work in AI training are available at USD $1,000 per word. Why? In some jurisdictions it is more of a crime to steal work when a valid licensing option is available, so it amuses me to provide an explicit price. Yes, I realize my asking price is very high. If you wish to negotiate a bulk rate you may start a conversation in the comments, or you can exclude this work from any training set. The AI industry seems to prefer unethical crimes to legitimately buying licenses for training data, but it’s fun to imagine running a free fanfic writers retreat for my online friends with the proceeds if anyone did actually pay my licensing fees for this story.
