I often think of how many societal problems are the product of our culture fetishizing dysfunction to boys. "Protects" us from things it shouldn't (consequences, emotions, etc,) but not the things it should (abuse, propaganda, etc.) How we are made the instruments of how society fails women and kids

Almost the very end of A Desire for All Things Cold. Delores suddenly has a frightening realization. Why was James so generous, and so heartfelt, and so suddenly relieved?

After all this, why push me away? Everyone else I get. His family treats him like shit. It's clear he'd grown apart from our other friends, so that was just more acknowledgment than a rejection. He said he never really formed connections any of the other places he lived. We both know how college friends can fall away just as easily. We seemed to fall right back together though. It felt like we were
going to be in touch for life after these past few days. Now he has no one.

And that maudlin goodbye speech. If that happened in a movie, I'd walk out. The saddest thing about this is that he seemed to be doing so much better. He was so relieved after the funeral. He had dumped every ounce of ballast that held him down for years. No trauma. No worries. He was smiling. I was so happy for him. He was fucking smiling … Oh, no.

It was at that moment everything crystalized in my head. He did know. He knew so much better than I did, and he was right. This hurts. I closed the box, then my eyes; my mouth. I turned the left side of my face toward the ceiling without thinking. How did I miss it? I've been through this before. Mari had given something to me too, something she loved. It was touching. She gave me the biggest hug
when I thanked her. Jamie changed after that. He felt unreachable.

I brought myself back to center and opened my eyes, but I was camouflaging the panic or the dread or both or something in between. I slid the necklace back into my bag, and pulled out my phone. Who the hell was I going to call? After how cold I just was, Jamie probably would not answer. I didn't know how to reach his brother or sister, and they surely would be useless. Mom? Dad? Paul or my
sister? What could any of them do? How would anyone be able to check on him? How am I ever going to be able to talk about this? I don't know how to even begin.

WIP is a small story. 1 family, a missed romantic opportunity, an unravelling of that history. It got bigger in concept as it became about the lasting effects of abuse. And smaller at the same time as I had show how people do what they do, and react the way they do. It is very detail dependent.
