Shavonna Holman: as a mother, I am shocked and appalled. When the issue arose, I was defensive because “I didn’t know.” But on reflection, I know that we are responsible for taking action. Rest assured that we will do our jobs to provide our children four walls of safety. Pls keep coming to meetings

Viridina Almanza Zavala: what tools and practices are consistent with the environment we want our students in? We cannot ignore the broader context, including the fear that immigrant students already face (paraphrased)

Ricky Smith: this is not us against you. We hear your voices. He had two AA boys go through OPS so is grateful for the diverse voices in the crowd. If the city wanted to allocate $66,000 he’d have rather spent it on a counselor.

Jane Erdrnberger: at first seemed like an improvement over pepper spray and tasers. She had a teacher friend die when breaking up a fight. The real question is more broadly about how to use law enforcement in schools.

Kimara Snipes: you all are asking the same questions I am. Speaks to need for a safety data report. OPD needs to answer for equipment etc but OPS needs answer for policies and why every use of force isn’t conveyed to board. (she was better spoken than 300 characters can convey)

Board member Nancy Kratky is difficult to understand. The microphone isn’t picking her up consistently. If I had to guess, all the SROs she’s met have been really nice. And teachers need help. Everything isn’t perfect. We all want our children to be well.

Bri Full: thanks crowd for coming. it’s hard to respond because even board members’ questions aren’t being answered (I assume by OPD). We have to use our authority to protect our students.

Gini Magnuson: these gloves were not part of any OPD contract or approval process, but that doesn’t absolve us from taking action. She’s sickened that our schools are being used as a testbed. Wants to exclude ALL use of force (ie pepper spray) in the upcoming SRO contract.

Public comments end at 7:51. President Erdrnberger asks board to make comment not discussion as this issue was not disclosed until after the agenda was approved.

Angela AuBuchon @memoryangela.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
He’s mad. Even if the gloves are never “used” they are still used every day because the children know they are there. mission (which they asked us to recite at the beginning of the meeting): to prepare all students for success in college, career, and life. “You are preparing them for jail.” 2/2

We have an old white man who has no direct connection to the school system but is outraged by the issue. Omaha has been sullied. He heard someone say that this is the 21st century equivalent of a whip. Those words will stay with him. 1/2

I’m going to venture that the current speaker is a trained Slam Poet. The cadence is beautiful. SSAs (school safety agents > SROs (school resource officers). OPS and OPD need to regain the public trust. Passion + insight. If the press doesn’t interview this man they’ve really missed an opportunity

President Erdrnberger takes a moment of personal privilege to inform the audience that board members have close up video of the speakers streamed to the board’s seats. Please don’t be offended if they watch the video as the speaker microphone is awkwardly positioned (I assume she’s also lip reading)

Parent speaker thanks board for extending public comment time. Credit to the Omaha Public School board members. They are attentive and many are taking notes. Barely suppress laughs when mom reminds that OPD “pulled a wall off a house to apprehend a shoplifter.” Crowd does not suppress laughter.

A mother and vet speaks to her experiences using a defibrillator as a medic. Compares the shocks from the glove to that of a defibrillator. Gives board members photos of her autistic son who has a heart condition.

Another student speaker: “these gloves defeat the purpose of making school a safe space.” Fears for her “black autistic brother” who gets overstimulated. “I’m ashamed to have to sit here as a student and tell the adults in the room that it’s not okay to harm students.”

NAACP Attorney: When was OPS informed? Why was community not informed? Who authorized? Is there a policy for use, including safeguards regarding medical devices? What training has been provided to officers? How many times have the gloves been used? What data suggests the gloves necessary?

Representative from the ACLU speaks third. Notes that OPD stated that the electronic gloves are only for use in schools indicating that their point is to shock children. (Gives reciepts in the form of news article to board) “We wouldn’t allow parents to shock their child at home” crowd *snaps*

The board has adjusted the agenda to prioritize public comment. Nearly 30 people have registered to speak. The goal is to hear everyone. Our first parent expresses concern over the possible use of shocks on her autistic son who also has an electric medical implant.

Crowd size has nearly doubled by the pledge of allegiance. A large portion of the crowd did not join the recitation, perhaps noting the irony of touting “liberty and justice” in the same breath as having to oppose the use of shock gloves on minors.

At the Omaha Public Schools board meeting. With 5 minutes until start time, about 50 people are in the audience. Board President Jane Erdrnberger just gave the warning that people wishing to speak must register now. I see parents, teachers, and teacher union reps in the crowd.

RAs, Ana and Jessica, have joined the 2026 @wmsymposium.bsky.social! This one of the best online conferences around: lots of great discussion, thoughtful approaches to networking, and centering of early career scientists. Hope to see Ana present in the future as she starts grad school in the fall!

Walking to the polling place where I am serving as an election worker really makes government/politics feel local and personal. Knowing that my personal polling place is yet a .5 mile further makes government/politics feel completely illogical and confusing.

And it gave them the confidence to challenge the local conservative incumbent state senator who’s run unopposed as long as anyone can remember. We (dem progressives) are finally acknowledging the importance of local elections and grassroots campaigning. That’s what these rallies really represent

We had MILLIONS of people at no kings events across the country who’ve now taken the small step of protesting in a “glorified parade”. But maybe now they are a little less scared for the actual march. Or maybe they attended a no kings event in their very rural red town where they are a minority…

If these events were the be all end all—then absolutely. But let’s reflect: the march on Washington (MLK’s famous 1963 “I have a dream” speech) had 250,000 people. Bloody Sunday of 1965 (aka Selma to Montgomery) had about 600 people. do you have Selma w/o Washington?

💯 the objectives are to bring people together and normalize resistance. I’m in the quintessential “blue dot 🔵” of Nebraska. Trust me, there are people here doing the hard work. But the “No kings” provides important energy and entry into the infrastructure. It serves a purpose.

If John Cavanaugh is elected to Congress, then MAGA republican Gov Pillan chooses Cavanaugh’s replacement in the Nebraska state unicameral. That seems like an ineffective way to “defend the 🔵” especially when we have other great congressional options in (my pick) Denise Powell and Crystal Rhoades
Yard sign I passed walking to work this morning that reads “John Cavanaugh for Congress. Stand up to Trump, defend the blue dot”
