RAs, Ana and Jessica, have joined the 2026 @wmsymposium.bsky.social! This one of the best online conferences around: lots of great discussion, thoughtful approaches to networking, and centering of early career scientists. Hope to see Ana present in the future as she starts grad school in the fall!

Walking to the polling place where I am serving as an election worker really makes government/politics feel local and personal. Knowing that my personal polling place is yet a .5 mile further makes government/politics feel completely illogical and confusing.

If John Cavanaugh is elected to Congress, then MAGA republican Gov Pillan chooses Cavanaugh’s replacement in the Nebraska state unicameral. That seems like an ineffective way to “defend the 🔵” especially when we have other great congressional options in (my pick) Denise Powell and Crystal Rhoades

Dr Jessica Mattingly described a pilot study to combat listening fatigue in children with hearing loss. Some children reported benefits after a single session of yoga. The hope is that restoring cognitive energy will benefit academic outcomes.
Dr Jessica Mattingly earned a PhD in Health Science from Texas Christian University. Her mentor is Dr Krystal Werfel.Dr Jessica Mattingly has long dark hair. The bar graph behind her shows children’s self report of fatigue.Infographic illustrates that children with hearing loss use more cognitive effort to understand spoken language. This increased effort leads to tiredness or mental exhaustion.

Dr. Lee Evans presents data that many early numeracy skills develop with support from language. Unfortunately, for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, language delays appear to lead to delays in numeracy.
Dr Lee Evans, who earned a PhD in Developmental Psychology from University of Connecticut, is mentored by Dr Krystal Werfel.Dr Lee Evans uncharacteristically grips the lectern (not podium) while showing data on numeracy skills in children with typical hearing and children who use cochlear implants. Dr Evans typically gestures emphatically when speaking.Infographic illustrating basic numeracy skills. Numeracy is the ability to work with and understand numbers. Patients with long-term unilateral hearing loss (UHL) make errors when deciding where a sound is coming from. However, they make fewer errors than listeners using an earplug to mimic UHL. Thus, overtime patients learn new ways to use cues that typically require two ears.

Dr. Brittany Williams describes a new project examining whether working memory and attention influence if people capitalize on spatial release from masking (SRM). SRM is important for people with hearing loss for whom separating speech from noise is particularly challenging. @brittwilli.bksy.social
