Summary:

When a mysterious phenomenon saves him from drowning as a child, Jayce Talis becomes obsessed with magic—to a concerning degree. His illicit research leads to a serious and regrettable accident and his consequent banishment from Piltover, forbidden from continuing the research he’s made his life’s purpose.
Cut off from everything he knows and carrying a heavy resentment towards those he once considered family, he retreats to a desolate island with a cryptic past. Lonely and adrift, Jayce struggles to accept his fate; but little does he realize that something out there in the wide sea is closer than he thinks—watching, waiting—and will not let him drown.

All heads turn as one as the imposing doors squeak theatrically on their hinges. A man enters, dressed in fine fitted purple and white robes, his steps echoed by the regular taps of his staff against the marble floor. It is less a fanciful accessory than a necessity, it seems, given the slight imbalance in his gait and the way he leans against it. Jayce watches as he makes his way to the table, walking past the councilors sitting closest to the doors to stand in the middle of the cog-like shape, facing him.
Soft brown locks frame his face and its high cheekbones. There is something both youthful and ancient about him, though he can't be any older than Jayce. Their eyes meet in a flicker of gold, and all the air gets sucked out of Jayce's lungs as he's faced with possibly the most striking being he has ever seen.

Panel 1, viktor’s blackened torso whirls with the unique signature of the hexcore anomaly, energy bolts gathering around his body. Panel 2, the arcane herald's dark face, seen from below. His eyes shine brightly. Panel 3, Viktor's hand lifts in the air, shaping the raw motion of the anomaly. His hand smears into fractals. panels 4 through 8: a flashback, of jayce giving a presentation in the academy. He is framed in front of a sky blue board, and says; most magic users live by instinct. the workings of their powers are like a black box. personalized, unseen, extremely random. so, the anthesis of science. hextech works differently. jayce winks. somewhere in the distance, a younger viktor watches his speech with a proud smile. Jayce continues: with our rune pattern keys, we bypass that cryptic connection mages have, allowing anyone to access the arcane with a proven, highly specific formula. Jayce holds a long stick to gesture at the many boards pushed together on the wall. some of them mounted on top of others to form the larger picture of his years studying magic. panels 9 through 11; the style shifts. back into the childish nightmare of viktor’s younger years. Narration, white on black. Ever since I was a little boy, all I've ever wanted was- a large puddle of blood covers the next panel. The thought is discarded. In the next panel, a child viktor braces himself against a large laboratory implement, holding a hammer in hand. he's breathing hard, blood splattered on his clothing, dripping from the blunt end of his weapon. his face is scribbled out, but tears still fall. end page.$

Page 15. Panels 1, 2, 3. Return to the academy flashback. Viktor appears next to Jayce, taking his turn on their project. He says; It's a request, spoken in the arcane's language. CONTROL IT, the severe narration demands, like a black sticker covering up half his figure. next panel, viktor says: take me to this precise location, or, reduce the weight of this particular object. you know what will happen, and you will see it done. in one panel viktor’s words are framed above the map of runeterra. in the next, jayce watches him deliver his monologue with a lovestruck smile on his face. they are in a large classroom, in the presence of other faculty. panel 4, a flash of the pirate ship. lucian opens the door to the prisoner hold, making his way down the stairs. Panel 5, classroom flashback. viktor stands between the sky blue divide of two blackboards, hand reaching out to touch the equations. he is braced on his cane. Mageborn have limitations. they excel at their native element, but cannot stray from it. just as a fish takes to water, but perishes in the sky… panel 6, viktor continues speaking but the camera shifts to this postcanon self, hair wild, hands raised, coat soaring against gravity. He is manipulating enough magical power to create a wall around him. Viktor’s voice: This may be because they use the arcane as brute fuel, breathing it like oxygen, while we barter with the hidden source underneath. panel 7, a small, lone shot of an imperfect hexgem.
