she goes through a comphet arc that is VERY direct about how she was forcing herself to date him and how that he was not the one for her when Mari is. She constantly equates Mari to the one she actually loves and it is Mari who gives her the strength to shatter the chains of the fairytale

Lara was never given time to live as herself due to the constant pressure from everyone to Find True Love no matter what it cost her or how it damaged her. The ending is how Mari gives her the strength to be HERSELF and center HERSELF for once and they are still very much in love at the end!

People will watch a show spend 11 episodes deconstructing how chasing a narrow, idealized version of "true love" hurts the MC, and then turn around and complain that the ending didn't give them that exact fantasy

Lesbian irl: furtive, subtextual, always unable to perceive whether a girl's love for her is like Love or just friendship, possibly even uncertain of their own feelings, unable to define what "romance" is Lesbian in fiction: *exactly that* Lesbian consumers: wtf are they cowards

Goodbye, Lara spoilers // #SayoLara there's something so beautiful in the simple act of showing Lara wearing pants. for the entire series, she only wears dresses that obfuscate the fact that she has two legs (or at work, the apron does the same). But at the end, she can fully embrace having them

it is extremely funny hearing people doom about mari and lara separating forever and then lara is just going to live basically two trains stops away. i support dramatic clingy mari chasing the train tearfully as her gf goes...twenty of god's precious minutes down the road

sayonara lara spoilers I do think it's important to remember that the aspect of queerness (broadly) Lara is specifically about IS comphet. (NOT talking about the prominent transgender allegories present too rn) it's about turning your back on what society/your family expects of you

MARI IS THE PERSON SHE LOVES BUT FINDING TRUE LOVE ISN’T YOUR LIFE’S PURPOSE IT ISN’T ANYONES IT DOESN’T DEFINE WHO YOU ARE YOU GOTTA FIND YOURSELF TOO LET LARA SPREAD HER WINGS AND BECOME HER OWN WOMAN FOR A WHILE RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

so i felt appreciative that sayolara ended with the message that falling in love doesn't have to be The Event of your life. and lara and mari are 15 year olds, they have the time to figure that shit out now. time that lara didn't have before

actually now that im rereading this interview its Extremely telling about the ending and the intent behind the work as a whole. really good

Interviewer: A “tough show”?

Koide: I was telling the staff all along that since this is a mermaid princess story, the plot will naturally involve Lara worrying and dealing with naive, internal struggles. But I really didn’t want to just focus on those naive parts and make a simple story where “she overcame her issues and grew up.” If the actual future looks bright, a straightforward coming of age story is totally fine. But if it doesn’t, I wanted to make a show that says, “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” That’s why I didn’t want to pair Lara with a character who was too naive.

Interviewer: Finally, please tell us about the developments from Episode 4 onwards.

Koide: I believe this work is fundamentally an anime that just keeps chasing after Lara. Lara is an extremely incomplete person, and she has plenty of weaknesses. But I did not want to make a character who had no flaws and only lovable traits. I would be really happy if the viewers would warmly watch over how Lara lives her life from here on out. Not knowing what is going to happen is part of the charm of this show, so please enjoy it all the way to the end!

i feel like we don’t talk enough about how a freshly human, unarmed kota fucking beat and killed and burned his way through that british aquarium like a one-man army to get to his lady love

When we're at "textually queer but it requires you to remember the plot" being considered "bait", I think we've gone too far and been too zealous with the label, tbh

off sabbatical for 1 second to say: sayonara lara as a show and esp. episode 12 can be read more dynamically if you don't just read the show's themes as solely about lesbianism against heteronormativity but also about trans womanhood and transition / "desiring to live in a world". ok bye again

The allegorical transness of Lara and Lisa existing in conjunction with the literal transness of Leo and Kota really does make the whole trans read feel integral to the show

LITERALLY HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE TO NOT READ HER AS THE MOST TRANSGENDER LESBIAN MERMAID POSSIBLE SHE SAYS SHE'S JUST BEEN LOOKING FOR A REASON TO LIVE AND THIS AFTER TELLING US TO OUR FACES THAT MARI IS HER REASON TO LIVE

Lara floating in the water and smiling. A white flower floats in front of the screen and the sky is white behind her.

Dub: "So I think the entire time..."
Sub: "All this time, I think I was just..."

Shot of Lara's human feet in the water, with some scale formations still visible and cuts all over from her soul's teeth biting into her. Oh my god this is the most transgender framing ever.

Dub: "I was searching for something."
Sub: "searching for this..."

Shot of the underground/underwater clam room where Lara's family is sleeping. Now it's bathed in aqua green again.

Dub: "I was searching for a world to live in."
Sub: "A world where I wanted to be."

Shot of Lara's light floating down to Rowan's clam.

Dub: "All along."
Sub: "That's all I wanted."

I know it was important for Lara to walk on her own in the finale. But i hope if her legs keep bothering her that she’ll get a mobility aid or two. #sayolara
