18% of Students in a study of 121 community colleges are classified as non–award seeking, or not actively pursuing an associate degree, a certificate or a diploma; among community colleges in Virginia and West Virginia, more than one-third of students in credit-bearing courses are not enrolled in an award-seeking program, while just 6% of those in North Carolina are classified that way.
