They crossed the big number! @bookshop.org has raised $50 million for indie bookstores! As part of the celebration I'll have a 15% off code for one of my book lists, Judge A Book By Its Cover, in early October here on Bluesky. #booksky

"Wow, this is an amazingly intricate show with what must be an insane core mystery, that we will eventually find out about." They broke the silent contract between watcher and writer. Should be fined or something for breach of contract. Have their creative license taken away.

I have seen too many Top Ten show lists with Lost on it, for the NYT 100 Best TV Shows of the 21st century. The writers of Lost obviously did not have a plot as they were going along. They threw everything and the kitchen sink at the viewers and we thought

A lot of fall and cozy in 'all the things NEW #3'. Plus a book coming soon from one of my favorite series, and a new Tommy & Tuppence book adaptation. Read with a mug of apple cider becuz you'll be feelin' the fall vibes. #booksky #eco #sustainable #organic #fall

all the things NEW #3

I'm wondering if 3rd person (not omniscient) might be doable in my series, so I'll find out as I go.

I've heard that it's kind of 'old' and that newbies shouldn't use it. Good advice to pause and reconsider a little ways in so I can fix it if need be.

000

Ooh, this is interesting. I could maybe minimize use of the 3rd person omniscient with various tricks like these.

Currently it's a paranormal thriller series. But everything I write it'd be much easier to do in screenplay format. Book adaptations are very popular right now.

Katie @meliiike.com · 09/09/2026

That's what I look like when I'm plotting my fiction - maybe he's writing a book like Mom?

000

That's my problem! 😩 I would loooove to write it as a screenplay, that's my default mode, it's similar to my plot outlines which I find very easy to write. But no one buys screenplays for casual reading.

320

Katie @meliiike.com · 09/09/2026

Yes, worried about that but I think I almost *have* to have it. My plot outlines have things that need to be known outside of first person etc.

Yes, I've read that! Amazing post, helped me discern that my POV is 3rd person omniscient. Which I've heard isn't the best for a first novel attempt but I think it almost has to be that. I'm assuming present tense is tricky with some POVs? I'm trying to get past tense in my mind as the default.

5 on Five is a thing on bookstack with a monthly theme, September's is 'Saudades: Books of Longing and Nostalgia'. My take on it: 'Five Book Series with Publishing Drama', which created longing in me for more from those series. There's a link in the post to read other bookstackers takes! #booksky

Five Book Series with Publishing Drama

Don’t mess with my series...

051

Yes, I think I've heard that before. I was worried that readers would sense something was 'off' becuz it's not the norm. Hoping I can get into past tense mode. Thank you for your advice!

130

Katie @meliiike.com · 05/09/2026

Thank you for those details - I hadn't thought about the challenges. I'm almost 100% on that have to do it past tense, and just need to get back into that gear in my mind.

120

Is present tense a no-no for adult fiction? I’ve been writing my zero drafts in present tense and now it’s my automatic state of affairs. Is it plausible for me to write in present tense for an adult book? If I self-publish I could do whatever? #writersky #amwriting

I have dozens. They help you fall into the story. Some song lyrics/vibes have inspired scenes.

*Finally* finished S1 of Wayward Pines. The book had a DNF moment in it but the TV show wasn't the same so finally went beyond the first episode. Great show, I rec it, it does have moments of graphic violence and some horror. Similars to other shows: The Prisoner, The X-Files. #tvsky #booksky

Matt Dillon laying on a street with his face turned pressed into the asphalt, the entire image upside down. The title of the show and the words "A place to die for."

I haven't seen Knives Out yet, probably should. I'm often disappointed by modern movies so I kind of avoid them. Tommy & Tuppence was a series from Christie that had action in it, instead of just a puzle, so always look forward to adaptations of it.

Katie @meliiike.com · 26/08/2026

This looks gooood. September 15th on BritBox. Looks like they're going to do a different spin instead of a direct adaptation? #tvsky #booksky

No red herrings in this one, but it has the 'no context' thing. Plus it's from the viewpoint of someone whose senses are being disrupted so it's even more indecipherable. Thank you for your vote!

Holiday! Love that movie. Have you seen Bringing Up Baby with Grant and Hepburn?

I have a lot of zero drafts. Very detailed outlines with bits of dialogue. The beginning of the zero draft for Sleep #1 and its synopsis 👇, plus a poll for you to vote if the flash-forward prologue should go. What's your current WIP? #writersky #amwriting

Wow! To reply to your other comment I would love a copy, thank you. 🙂

I'm into that kind of self-help research too. Prevention, or fix what's wrong rather than just balming it.

Taking down the old one would avoid confusion for new (and previous?) readers. You could probably prove that you're the same person though in terms of the plagiarism? Your name is the same on both.

Yikes, understand that. I don't like medical/doctor shows either but for different reasons. I was glad for Hugh to have success in the US (I was a fan pre-House) but also bummed he was doing a medical show. He has a new show coming to Peacock in November, a comedy with Amy Poehler.

I love the title. Romantasy is very popular right now. I also love conspiracies, have a lot of them in my plots.

120

I read a bit about the concept around 'None of the Above' - clever and very funny! Amazing that you can re-work your story and send it out again, make it even better etc. I think being an indie author has perks and that's one of them.

I loved Avenue 5 too. Almost a guarantee becuz I'm a Hugh Laurie fan, and love him in a comedy role. Planning to rewatch some of it.

I loved Dark Matter but never got to reading the book first. It was in my TBR. S2 is coming end of August! Looking forward to seeing where they take it now.

Maybe have to have others name it for you. Have beta readers make suggestions. A poll for people to vote from a list of titles.

Any other first time book writers? I have many zero drafts but now finally turning one into paragraphs. First in a paranormal thriller series titled Sleep. I'll talk about writing once in a while here and on my substack 'all the things'. What's the genre and title of your first book? #writersky

It's based on a book so there's double the chances that somebody did enough research.

Katie @meliiike.com · 10/08/2026

Coming Nov 23rd! It's an adaptation of Kate Myers’ book Excavations. It's a comedy but also has an international conspiracy. Comedy mixed with suspense/thriller is one of my favorite multi-genres. Also a Hugh Laurie fan. Christmas present for me. #tvsky #booksky

Yes that would have been a disappointment for me too. Same reason why I stopped watching Your Friends & Neighbors.

A quote from Donald E. Westlake's Dortmunder series. I didn't note which book! But you can assume they're all this funny. I describe the series as a 1980's Steve Martin movie mixed with a heist/caper movie from the 70's. Bookshop series #1 ebook affiliate link: bookshop.org/a/109872/978... #booksky

“A friend of mine'll follow him home tonight", Tiny said, "to get me the address. He's on the four to twelve. Around one, I'll put on a ski mask and go to that guy's house and put his head in his holster." "A ski mask," Dortmunder echoed. He was thinking how much good a ski mask would do to disguise this monster. In order to be effectively disguised, Tiny would have to put on, at a minimum, a three-room apartment.

The best indie genre fiction I've read, stacks up to traditionally published (if not better). I'm delighted that right now most of them are .99 or free! #booksky #indieauthor
