I got asked the question about missing aspects of living before monastic life, and I talked about remembering the past as the process of learning and unlearning so that we grow in humility and truth. Also, there is a distinction between being able to choose and learning to be free.

I hosted a group of college students (biblical studies, history, theology majors) who were on retreat before graduating in May. Good conversations on hopes, dreams, and what is the deal with people wearing weird clothes and living the evangelical life. The relics were the highlight of their trip.

For the Christology class, the professor asked the seminarians to design and lead a comprehensive, four-week adult faith-formation series on Christology for curious theo nerds and "normies."

Less optimistic than hopeful and redemptive. Comfort, comfort My people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her forced labor has been completed; her iniquity has been pardoned. For she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.

I do think Catholic philosophy is still a viable endeavor and desperately needed in many corners of academic and public life. It often gets regulated to 'this old historical box of stuff', and none other shall be considered.

A confrere formed with analytic proclivities and strict Thomist(what is that?) once remarked that "phenomenology has its place" which, broadly speaking, meant for the humanities and not anywhere near philosophy departments in Catholic institutions.

Psalm 103 (Grail, 1963) You made the moon to mark the months; the sun knows the time for its setting. When you spread the darkness it is night and all the beast of the forest creep forth. The young lions roar for their prey and ask their food from God.

A common struggle in virtual Catholicism is spiritual discernment. It is easy to use social media without noticing one’s motivation, affectivity, and circumstances. Moreover, it is easy to become overwhelmed and fixated because such technology influences our sensible and intellectual behaviors.

1. Ecclesiology is an extension of Christology. 2. The social doctrine of the Catholic Church as taught by the popes is firmly rooted in Chalcedonian Christology and the Nicene profession of faith. 3. So too is the entirety of the teaching of Second Vatican Council.

So, our moral theology class stumbled into a similar conversation concerning Pinckaers' freedom of indifference vs freedom for excellence with respect to virtue theory. In either case, we circled around the question and we couldn't get clear on how we understand human freedom and self-determination.

Through the Cross, You turned suffering into hope and death into life. Teach us to carry our own crosses with faith, courage and trust in You. It is a custom of the monastic house that monks in formation remain clean-shaven until they take solemn vows. One grace of that ascetic practice is that one realizes that the length and quality of beards, mustaches, and facial hair are not indicative of becoming wise or intelligent.
